Franklin County School Board ramping up search for superintendent

The search for a new superintendent is ramping up, as the current superintendent will retire at the end of the school year. The Franklin County School Board conducted a survey for public input about what they wanted in the next superintendent. “They lead our division. They’re the CEO of our division. So, we take it very seriously,” said Chairman Jeff Worley.

Virginia senate passes bill requiring AEDs in public schools

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - The Virginia State Senate has passed a bill that will require automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in every public elementary and secondary school across the commonwealth. Introduced by Jeremy McPike (D-Prince William), the bill is a response to NFL player Damar Hamlin's sudden cardiac arrest during a regular season game in January.

MCPS: Former Superintendent Mark Miear repays amount stipulated in agreement

CHRISTIANSBURG - Former Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Mark Miear has repaid the district the $55,137 that was stipulated in an agreement with the school board. The school system confirmed the repayment Wednesday. The amount, which was due Jan. 31, is described as an excess payment in a settlement agreement the school board unanimously approved late last year.

Portsmouth School Board appoints parent who is a 'big advocate for students' to fill vacant seat

PORTSMOUTH - The Portsmouth School Board voted Thursday to appoint Irene Boone to fill its vacant seat left by now-City Council Member Vernon Tillage Jr. Boone will serve on the board for the remainder of Tillage's term, which ends next year. Tillage was elected to City Council in November.

Superintendent Clashes With Sheriff Over School Resource Officers

In Spotsylvania County, Virginia, school officials and the sheriff's office are in a standoff over extra school resource officers in some high schools. After several recent violent fights involving students, the sheriff's office added deputies to four high schools. Days later the school superintendent asked the sheriff's office to stand down.

Albemarle teachers make second bid for collective bargaining

The union representing Albemarle County teachers and school staff has submitted a second resolution for collective bargaining rights, nine months after the school board denied its first bid. The Albemarle Education Association presented the resolution at a county school board meeting Thursday night. Roughly 1,300 employees at Albemarle schools have now signed union authorization cards.
