HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Two Hermitage High School students have turned their joint hobby into a way they can give back to their classmates while helping them look their best. Hermitage High School is buzzing this week as students prep for homecoming.

So many people have signed up to speak at the Hanover County School Board meeting on Nov. 9 that the board will hold a special meeting this week to hear from parents and community members on the board's proposed transgender student policies. The special meeting is Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 5 to 11 are just around the corner. With rollout hopefully this week, school districts in central Virginia are working to vaccinate students. Albemarle County and Charlottesville City schools are both working with the Blue Ridge Health District to make COVID-19 vaccines easily available.

Henry County School Nutrition will serve meals at no charge to children 18 and under through the At-Risk Afterschool Meals Program. The same meals will be available at no separate charge to all participants at each site.

A new auditorium for Amherst County High School is a project 30 years in the making for the county's school division. Rob Arnold, Superintendent of Amherst County Public Schools, said a much needed overhaul has been in several versions of the division's capital improvement plan without coming to fruition over the years.

Montgomery County announced a new approach to student quarantine measures Monday, saying the changes will help keep students in school after thousands have been sent home this fall for exposure to the coronavirus.

Arlington Public Schools in Virginia is ratcheting up the daily pay rate for permanent, daily and long-term substitutes in an effort to attract more teachers. In a news release, the school system said the increase "will place APS as a frontrunner in the Northern Virginia Region for substitute pay rates" that took effect Monday.
