Federal judge dismisses complaint against Loudoun County Public Schools

A U.S. District Court judge in Alexandria on Wednesday dismissed a complaint that sought to suspend the Loudoun County School Board from operating a program the division adopted to combat systemic racism in the school division by collecting data on accounts of such incidents.

Glenn Youngkin said Friday he's confident his administration will win a court battle over his executive order allowing parents to opt out of school mask mandates for their children, but he advised parents to "listen to their principal" until the Supreme Court of Virginia issues its ruling.

A group of Chesapeake parents are hoping to block the governor's executive order banning masks, but the attorney general filed a motion this week asking the Virginia Supreme Court to dismiss their lawsuit. The parents' lawyer has filed a brief objecting to the motion.

With the omicron variant surging across the country it is no surprise that area school divisions are also seeing the affects of this highly contagious COVID-19 variant. As of Friday, Rockingham County Public Schools had 123 total active cases. RCPS had 1,379 total cases since school began in August.

Richmond School Board votes to take legal action in apparent attempt to block Youngkin mask order; dozens of teachers plan to call in sick Monday

Harris-Muhammed, who chairs the board, asked Superintendent Jason Kamras and School Board members not to speak about the matter publicly Sunday. Attorney General Miyares, defending Youngkin's K-12 mask order, asks Va. Supreme Court to dismiss suit

Facing a lawsuit just days into his term over his executive order making masks optional for schoolchildren, Gov. Glenn Youngkin on Thursday night asked the Supreme Court of Virginia to dismiss the complaint. The filing from the office of Attorney General Jason Miyares cited a state law that says parents have a "fundamental right to make decisions concerning the upbringing, education, and care of the parent's child."

By staff Fluvanna County School Superintendent Peter M. Gretz said he has learned some parents are attempting to organize students to come to school Monday without a mask. Gretz sent an email today (Jan. 20) to Fluco staff and families urging parents "not to bring conflict to our schools Monday."

Page County Public Schools in Luray, Virginia will increase police presence at schools Monday after a mother made a perceived threat during a school board meeting Thursday night. Amelia King was upset about the school mask mandate and said her children would not be wearing masks on Monday and she would "bring every single gun loaded and ready.

Youngkin announces more school safety guidance Friday as 3 Richmond-area school districts are among those defying his mask order

In the past week, school leaders in Richmond, and Henrico and Chesterfield counties decided to uphold their mask mandates for students despite an executive order saying parents have a choice come Monday morning. Anti-hazing bill, named for Loudoun teen, advances in Senate

Virginia lawmakers are considering proposed legislation to update and strengthen anti-hazing policies at colleges and universities nearly a year after a Loudoun County teen died during a college pledge event. On Monday and Thursday Sen. Jennifer Boysko (D-33rd), who is carrying SB 439, otherwise known as "Adams Law," brought the proposal forward to Senate committee that reviews higher education bills in Richmond.
