The Village of Clemmons Council announced today its intention to purchase 12.42 acres of land from Novant Health, adjacent to the Village Point Greenway and Fishing Pier. The purchase price totals $2,235,600. The purchase agreement, finalized on Monday, March 11, 2024, marks a significant milestone in the village's commitment to preserving open space and enhancing community recreational opportunities.
Funded through money awarded under House Bill 259 Appropriations Act, the acquisition underscores the council’s dedication to expanding public community spaces. Mayor Mike Rogers expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Acquiring property to enhance our public community space has been a top priority for this council. We could not pass on this wonderful opportunity in the center of Clemmons."
The acquired land will not only preserve existing open space but also provide room for additional amenities to cater to the needs of the community. Future plans may include the construction of permanent restrooms, relocating the Clemmons Community Policing Officers, establishing an event structure, building picnic shelters, and promoting passive recreation.
"We are excited about the potential this acquisition holds for our community," Mayor Rogers continued. "With the support of the State’s Appropriations Act, we have been able to secure this property without using reserve funds.”
Novant Health has long been recognized as a reliable community partner, and their collaboration with the Village underscores their commitment to community well-being. Their willingness to accept the Village’s offer at a significant reduction from the asking price demonstrates their continued dedication and partnership with the Village.
Once the property is officially acquired, the Village of Clemmons will initiate a comprehensive planning process to solicit input from the community on the development of the area. Residents will have the opportunity to voice their preferences and suggestions to shape the future amenities and features of the expanded Village Point Greenway.
The acquisition is expected to be completed this summer.
