Learn About the Community on a Feminist Walk
Join us Thursday, July 22, 6:00 - 7:30 P.M. on a walk outside and socially distanced to learn about the Women’s Centre’s surrounding community through a gender+ lens.
All ages and genders welcome! The walk will happen rain or shine, starting at the Women’s Centre (39 4 Street NE).

We encourage participants to wear a mask and will have them available if needed.

150 Acts of Reconciliation

This Canada Day we encourage you to make some time for reflection and learning. We share the resource 150 Acts of Reconciliation for some ideas on how you can take action today, and every day, to make progress on reconciliation and allyship with Indigenous communities.
Remembering Our Children Vigil

On Thursday, July 1, 11:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M. everyone is invited to attend a Remembering Our Children Vigil at Prince's Island Park. This event is hosted by the Urban Society of Aboriginal Youth (USAY) to honour all of the children who did not return from residential schools.
Shaw Birdies for Kids

Once again, we are lucky to be participating in Shaw Birdies for Kids, presented by AltaLink as a charity partner. Each year, the Shaw Charity Classic crowns one golf champion and over 200 charity winners. If you can, donate to our Girls Programs before August 15 and have your donation matched up to 50%.

Runners Can Support the Women’s Centre Through
the Scotiabank Marathon

Run Calgary is working with city partners, public health officials, sponsors and stakeholders to create a hybrid event this September. Participants will be able to choose between an in-person event on September 19 or the virtual race experience from September 1 to 30.

All participants can fundraise for any of our 80+ charities through the Scotiabank Charity Challenge.

Participants can view the event schedule and register here and add their names to the Women’s Centre Team located in the list of charities.
Community Conversations with Poverty Talks

Poverty Talks! is engaging with the community on what to ask candidates in the upcoming municipal election.

Family Law Workshop
Join us Tuesday, July 13, 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. online for a family law workshop: “Learn your rights in Child Custody & Child Support." This workshop will be led by a volunteer lawyer to understand your rights in the division of property and assets during separation or divorce.

The Power of Nature
Join us Wednesday, July 14, 6:00 - 7:00 P.M. for The Power of Nature. We will meet on Zoom with Green Calgary to explore the importance of renewable energy and how it impacts our lives, our careers, and our economy. We will learn about the science behind clean energy and energy-saving tips to use at home and in everyday life.

What's Next for Child Care?

Join us Thursday, July 15 at 6:00 P.M. to hear about what’s in the historic child care promise from the federal government, to talk about what your needs are and what affordable child care would mean to you. Come ask questions about what comes next, and to learn about things you can do to support efforts to improve access to affordable, quality child care in our province.

Coming up in July & August: Girls Summer Programs!
We have programming for youth in grades 5-12 this year. All girl-identifying individuals are welcome.

Programs offer participants opportunities to build their capacity in leadership and activism, while being part of a supportive community and having fun.

In response to what we have heard from our community, we are offering on-line and blended summer programming (online and in-person). We will provide all supplies, and meals and bus tickets for girls attending in-person programs.

Our Indigenous People's Day Event Honoured Indigenous Women in the Community

We took a moment to honour the precious lives of the victims of the residential school system.

And then we had performances and learned from:
  • Chantal Chagnon, Cree Ojibwe, Metis Singer and social justice advocate, and activist
  • Flora Johnson, Indigenous artist from the Mosakahiken Cree Nation
  • Mini Thni Dancers from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation
  • Tapisa Kilabuk, advocate, activist and Inuk woman from the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut
Making Visible Our Shared History
On June 24, we co-hosted an event called “Making Visible Our Shared History: The Context for Renaming Institutions” that explored the importance of renaming institutions as a step towards reconciliation.

Do you miss hanging out at the Women’s Centre, drinking coffee and connecting with other women? You’re in luck – we are offering drop-in time this summer in the garden! Come see how the garden is growing, enjoy the murals in process, have a snack and enjoy being back with the community.

If you want to volunteer to host this garden drop-in time, please email sarah@womenscentrecalgary.org.
Join us throughout the summer for our first ever online book club! We will meet to laugh, chat and share our thoughts on the book “Girl, Woman, Other” by Bernardine Evaristo through gently facilitated online gatherings. Weekly chapter summaries will be provided to support our reading journey!

Paper and audio copies of the book are available through the Calgary Public Library. For support in accessing a library membership or if you need support in accessing the book, please email Monique at RSVP@womenscentrecalgary.org.
