Video Update From ARC Emergency Shelter

The work continues...

Dear Friend,

I am writing to you from the Animal Rescue Corps Emergency Shelter and Medical Center here in Nashville, Tennessee where 121 dogs and 5 exotic birds rescued from unimaginable conditions have been receiving constant care, and we are happy to report they are improving daily.  Please watch the video update below for additional footage from the rescue scene and Emergency Shelter.

The ARC shelter has been electric with activity.  Shelter teams are working in shifts to establish regular feeding cycles, ensure clean, comfortable housing and provide crucial socialization.  Immediately upon arriving, veterinarians and technicians evaluated every dog and addressed all urgent medical issues, including several life-saving surgeries.  A nursery was established for mothers with pups and those expecting.  A quarantine area was identified to separate and evaluate those that might have contagious conditions, and treatment plans were established for those with less critical conditions.

As soon as all dogs were medically examined, groomers began to remove the matted and feces encrusted fur that is the hallmark of a puppy mill dog, matting so severe that it limits motion, sight and even breathing.  Even with multiple grooming teams, this process has taken days.  Most dogs have to be groomed in stages, as it would simply be too exhausting and stressful to try to repair years of neglect all at once.  The animals immediately began to respond to this care.  Imagine the joy of a dog who can wag his tail again because it is no longer matted to his side.

One of the most rewarding sights has been the steady stream of volunteers and compassionate individuals who have contributed food, blankets, towels, sweaters, and toys for the dogs. Some volunteers have waited in turns to help with socialization, teaching dogs that have never known care to respond to a gentle touch so that they can immediately transition into a permanent loving home.

Because of compassionate supporters like you, these 121 precious lives now have a chance to be dogs for the very first time. In fact, the number of dogs is growing as we prepare for one of the expectant mothers to give birth in the next few hours.  What a comfort to know that these newborn pups will never know the stench and darkness of that place. They will never know the pain of the wire mesh on their small paws, endured for years by their mother.  These pups will not be at risk of being shoved in a box and forgotten like so many others when they fail to sell at a desirable age.

Even with all the incredible outpouring of compassion, this rescue, like any large-scale rescue, comes with great expense. Our primary supporters for this rescue, Ady Gil World Conservation, American Dog Rescue and PetSmart Charities, made it possible for ARC to commit to saving these precious lives by deploying resources. However, this operation is far from over, and the work will continue until ARC is awarded custody and fulfills our promise that their suffering has ended forever. Please join us in this mission by giving as generously as you can.
