Video Box Design Best Practices

Assuming you’re now convinced that the ROE (return on experience) a video box will deliver is far better than other marketing options you can try, you need to design one if you’re going to get one out soon. For a refresher, here’s a link: So, You Want To Send A Video Box

That said, if you’re a video box newbie, you’re wondering how best to go about this... OR what people frequently call best practices. Well, you’re in luck! We’ve done a few of these projects — LOL! More like thousands…

To begin with, designing a video box starts with thinking backwards. At least at MediaFast, that’s how we prefer to begin the process.

Our first question is: “What’s going inside the box?”

To which usually the response is: “What are your standard sizes?”

The simple answer is that we don’t have a standard size box. While our competitors do, we prefer to build them with custom molds in the cavity based on what our clients want to go inside them. This ensures that when recipients receive their boxes, they appear to be purposely built — not boxes that were taken off a shelf with items simply tossed inside...or worse, shoehorned inside.

Instead, with our video boxes, recipients are impressed with the symmetry and balance. And everything fits perfectly inside a well thought-out design.

Here are video examples to give you a better idea:

That said, let's get to the part where we roll up our sleeves and design one!

For the most part, think about what will be of value to your recipients. If you’re showcasing a new product, perhaps a sample of that would be ideal. Or, if you’re going to give them a special gift to incite them to attend an event or to thank them for their business, then including that would be best.

In any case, we’ll need samples of those items. Then we’ll create possible layouts that will include measurements for width, depth, and height. Once the dimensions are nailed down, then we’ll create a structural design template on which your team can layout graphics and copy.

Also regarding design, here’s a pro tip: Keep it simple! Why? Because there’s a lot going on in a video box.

For instance, when the box is opened, a video starts playing in the lid and there are goodies inside the cavity! Since recipients typically feel a combination of surprised, intrigued and impressed, it’s best to let them enjoy the experience — remember the ROE referenced above — and not distract them with a bunch of messaging.

In other words, less is more…and more is too much.

This Month's Case Study:

Fenty Beauty & Fenty Skin

Recently, Amy Hafen, President of MediaFast, shared this about Fenty Beauty & Fenty Skin.

“To enhance the presentation of their new makeup line, Rihanna's team worked with us to create a state-of-the-art Video Box. Then they had them delivered to A-List celebrities and influencers, and the recipients ‘went crazy’.

Influencers even created ‘unboxing’ videos showing how impressive they were, and several of the videos went viral on social media, which created amazing product buzz!

This cosmetic Video Box was the first of its kind in 2018, and since then, video-integrated product boxes have become a highly successful go-to for companies in many industries.”
