On February 26, I had the wonderful opportunity to be part of the inaugural meeting of our LVS Alumni Association. Toni, Carol, and I welcomed our first members.
Our alumni are eager to return to LVS and connect with our current residents. They will participate in Monday House Meetings, dinners, outings and on-site classes. Our Alumni will be in place as mentors to our current residents and become valued resources as those who have recently been “in their shoes.”
During our meeting, Mr. Banks, Mr. Poole and Mr. Lee each shared their personal journey of successfully completing our LVS program and securing and maintaining stable housing for two or more years. Their testimonies recounted the transition from homelessness to LVS to permanent housing.
Mr. Banks, U.S. Army, 1974-1975, recounted his experience of facing homelessness after being evicted from his apartment, feeling abandoned and scared. Fortunately, he was connected to LVS within a short period of time, and upon seeing the beds, exclaimed, “I thought I was in heaven!” He shared that right then and there he told God, “If you give me one more chance, I promise I will not mess up again.” Mr. Banks has worked hard to uphold his pledge. He is so happy in his apartment and eager to come and talk with our Veterans, offering any encouragement he can. His commitment is unwavering, declaring, “I will do anything you ask me to – if you say, come and sweep the floor, I will be here with a broom! Why? Because - plain and simple, LVS saved my life.”
I am deeply grateful to be part of our LVS community. Thank you to all who support and empower us in our vital mission. Your contributions are invaluable and instrumental to our success. These are truly ‘gifts that keep on giving!’ Just ask our friend, Mr. Banks.
