Veterans day is tomorrow, and we are so happy to celebrate all of our Wendell Falls veterans! Read below to learn more about Veterans day, and join us in honoring the veterans in the community.
What is Veterans Day?
Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. For one day, we stand united in respect for you, our veterans.
History of Veterans Day
Although today we all know it as Veterans Day, November 11 was originally called "Armistice Day" in recognition of the armistice agreement that ended World War I on November 11, 1918. While World War I was called "the war to end all wars," it failed to do just that. By the early 1950s, millions of Americans had served in World War II and the Korean War. So, to be more inclusive and honor all veterans' service, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day on June 1, 1954.
What is the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day?
Memorial Day honors service members who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle. Deceased veterans are also remembered on Veterans Day, but the day is set aside to thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military - wartime or peacetime.
