Veterans' Build Recap

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our first annual Veterans' Build! We had an amazing turnout with over 150 veterans and supporters in attendance. The Build united veterans and their loved ones in a community effort to build the next 12 homes in our Palmdale neighborhood. The day consisted of rough grading, building concrete pathways and porches, installing straps and tico plates, and painting.

Family Services

Tear Soup Workshop

Tear soup books are created by military veterans in a 12-week workshop. The pages go through metaphorical process of creating a soup that holds their grief and loss. Some of the subjects take more than one page for the veterans to process and they use mixed media materials and collage intentionally, so that they can focus on the process of what they are feeling while they are creating the pages of the book.

Time Capsule Workshop

Time capsules are a beautiful and creative way for our families and veterans to come together and honor who they are now and where they want to be. Gifting a small piece of themselves and their family to the community.

The capsules are created with mason jars and buried in an ammo case within the neighborhood. When the neighborhood is complete and all capsules are buried, the neighbors come together to decide on a quote to add to a stone that will sit atop all of their time capsules in the ammo containers. This quote will represent their neighborhood and remind themselves and tell future homeowners to open the capsules in 30 years.

The capsules include several personal elements, everything thoughtfully considered with symbolic meaning. The creation of the jar represents the family or veteran, it is covered with photos, affirmations, and embellishments.
