How a Church Can Help Their Pastor Plan for Retirement.
It’s summer. Even in northern Minnesota! In most churches this is the budgeting off season. The only thing you’re worried about is the summertime-giving-lull, but if your church is one that wants to provide as generously (1 Corinthians 9:8ff) and reasonably as they can for their pastors then let’s think together about the pastor’s retirement.
First, Consider the Reasons Pastor’s Retire
As often as I’ve heard pastors say, “we always have ministry to do,” what we observe is – most – or even almost all pastors engage in some sort of retirement age decrease in workload and thus, income.
There are many reasons why a pastor might move toward retirement, here are a few of those reasons: they no longer want to work, they no longer “have” to work – because they have ample income from savings, the health of their spouse needs full attention, their personal health keeps them from full time work, or, I’ve seen it - the church is ready for them to retire.
