Vacaville City Council Authorizes Agreement with Vacaville Museum Foundation for Purchase of the Harbison House and Operation of the Vacaville Museum
VACAVILLE, Calif. – December 12, the Vacaville City Council authorized a new operating agreement with the Vacaville Museum Foundation for the operation of the Vacaville Museum located at 213 Buck Avenue. In addition, the City Council authorized a purchase agreement for acquisition of the historically significant Harbison House located within the Harbison Event Center (HEC).
In a recent development, the City engaged in discussions with the Vacaville Museum Foundation regarding the future of the Harbison House and the operation of the Vacaville Museum. These conversations have resulted in the formulation of two crucial agreements that uphold the City’s and Foundation’s commitment to preserving history and ensuring community benefit.
Situated within the HEC at 1681 East Monte Vista Avenue behind the Nut Tree Plaza shopping mall, the Harbison House has long been an integral part of Vacaville’s cultural tapestry, emblematic of the City’s rich heritage.
Built in 1906 by George Sharpe and designed by Hester Harbison, the Harbison House symbolizes Vacaville's historical roots. Gifted to Helen Harbison Power and Ed Power Sr., founders of the renowned Nut Tree, the house stands as a testament to the city's emergence as a regional attraction.
Key Point of the Harbison House Purchase Agreement:
- Asset Transfer: The Harbison House will be acquired by the City, granting full control over the Harbison Event Center, safeguarding future decisions regarding the site's use.

- Term: A five-year initial term with the potential for three additional five-year extensions by mutual agreement.
- City Contribution: A revised contribution structure starting at $45,000 for fiscal year 2024-2025, gradually increasing to $50,648 by fiscal year 2028-2029, facilitating sustained support for the Foundation’s activities.
- Maintenance and Repairs: A balanced approach between the City and Foundation for facility upkeep, with the City overseeing major systems and the Foundation ensuring day-to-day maintenance.
- Reporting Requirements: Clear obligations for the Foundation to provide annual reports on museum activities and community engagement, enhancing transparency and accountability.
