Expect a Crowd-
Make the Most of the Opportunity
|
On Sunday we will have a bigger than usual crowd for worship. Easter commands attention from folks who don’t join us in person every week. It is only fitting that churches be bursting at the seams on the day that love changed our eternal future. Even a casual understanding of God’s radical intervention for our salvation warrants worship on Easter.
Every year we preachers get hopeful. At times we slip from hopeful to naïve. “If we do everything right, welcome them, preach the perfect sermon, sing the right songs, serve the best coffee they will all come back.” After rising to preach for 32 previous Easters, I can tell you they are not all coming back. They are not all coming back, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t still pull out all the stops. Easter demands our best regardless of the attendance on April 7th and beyond. Jesus came to us, met us on our terms, and showed us God’s amazing love by word and deed. We must celebrate!
Let’s head into Sunday expecting a crowd and committed to making the most of the opportunity. Let’s make the most of the opportunity to show the love of God to others. It starts in the parking lot. Actually, it starts at home. Instead of everybody driving separately, come together. That will help with parking. When you do look for a space, look for a space as far from the building as your feet will comfortably carry you. Those of us who can make the hike from the upper lot, or the far corners, let’s do so as an act of love towards those for whom mobility is a challenge.
To make things flow smoothly, let’s all try to get to church early, rather than at the last minute. Move up closer than usual. You can move back next week, trust me there will be room! Move up toward the front and sit in the middle of your row. Sitting in the middle makes it easier and more inviting for others to join you. Make an effort to learn the names of everyone who comes within 10 feet of you. Lead with your name. “Do you know who I am?” Or “Do you remember me?” can be off-putting, to say the least. It should be true all the time, but particularly on Easter, everyone is on the greeter team. You might not be assigned to a particular entryway, but consider where you sit to be your assigned station. Make sure your section is well greeted.
They all will not come back, at least they haven’t yet. They haven’t all come back, but some have. Some have worshipped on Easter and found their way back. It might be your effort, your willingness to change seats, to sit in the middle and make the introduction that is the thing that leads to their return. Simple, practical actions that could bring an individual, a family, and generations that follow into the Vineville family and into a more meaningful relationship with Jesus.
See you in church.
Peace,

NOT EVERYTHING CAN BE DONE AHEAD
|
|
We do everything we can ahead of time to prepare for Easter Sunday, but some things have to be done that morning. No matter how much we would prefer otherwise, part of the preparation can’t be done until Sunday. We need help with two things. Can you help make the day more beautiful and joyful for all of us?
One thing that has to be done on Sunday morning is blow-up balloons. We have helium, balloons, and ribbons. We would love to have help! On the first Easter, it was the early crew who discovered the miracle of Easter. Will you join us at 7:15 am? There will be good coffee and doughnuts! With help, we can be done in thirty to forty minutes. Email me at jasbell@vinevillemethodist.org if you can help.
We also need cut flowers and branches of blooming plants from your yards. These will be used to decorate our cross. Please bring yours to the CLC before the 9:00 service. We will also need help assembling the flower cross. We have a cross already covered in chicken wire. You are asked to bring cut flowers or branches of blooming trees or shrubs from your yard. Before worship begins you can add them to the cross. The flower cross in full bloom will be a sign of our joy.

Palm Sunday was amazing. We had two great services. At both our children led us into Jerusalem waving palm branches and singing. The band was great, and the choir and orchestra were exceptional. By all accounts, it was a great day and a great start to Holy Week. We still have several opportunities for worship and reflection. This is the week in which our salvation was won. This is the week when the earth and all of us who walk upon it were rescued. Holy Week deserves our undivided attention.
On Thursday, March 28th at @10:30 AM Evie Crumblis and Teresa Edwards will lead an experience of the Last Supper through art. Then @ 6:00 PM, we will gather for Maundy Thursday worship in the sanctuary. This service remembers the Passover that Jesus celebrated with his disciples the night before his death. Hand washing and holy communion will be part of our service. A nursery will be available.
On Friday, March 29th we will gather at noon for Good Friday worship in the sanctuary. The events of this day merit time set apart with God – why not gather as a community for worship? This service will last about 30 minutes. A nursery will be available.
Saturday is a time of fun and play. We will have our Annual Easter Egg Extravaganza at noon at the Liipferts. (111 Grove Pointe Drive) Even if you don’t have anybody to hunt eggs it is still fun to watch. If you have never been to the Egg Hunt you owe it to yourself to check it out!
On Easter Sunday, March 31st, we will gather at 9:00 in the CLC and at 11:00 in the sanctuary. Who will you invite to worship with you at Vineville on Sunday? This is one of the best times to invite a visitor. We will be making a flower cross in the CLC so please bring flowers from your yard to help adorn the cross. There will be balloons and butterflies along with special music as we celebrate the wonder of Easter. The only thing that will make it better is for you to be present!
Peace,
