Morningstar L.H. Williams Scholarshop

Vineville has had a long-running partnership with L.H. Williams, our neighborhood elementary school. At one time our work with the school and community operated under the name of Morningstar.

In 1992 a Vineville member established a fund as part of our Vineville Foundation to offer a college scholarship to a student who had attended Williams and was graduating from a Bibb County High School. The scholarship was to help defray tuition costs that might prevent a student from being able to afford further education.

In recent years we have invited the recipient to speak to the fifth graders at the L.H. Williams award program we host each May. The class that is leaving Williams is moving into middle school and college can seem like a long way away. Not only that the cost of education can be overwhelming. At the awards program a student who lives or lived in the neighborhood shares their journey from L.H. Williams through middle and high school. They tell the fifth graders where they are going to college and what they hope to do when they graduate.

This year’s scholarship recipient is Jeremiah Harris. Jeremiah attended Williams and just graduated from Central High School. Jerimiah is moving in to his Morehouse dorm this week. He plans to pursue a degree in Computer Science. In May Jeremiah shared his story with the students from Williams. His success story provided encouragement and hope to both the students and their parents. Our investment in Jeremiah will hopefully inspire other students to aim high!

CAN HOMETOWN HUNGER

The Summer Sunday School canned food drive was a huge success. You brought in a ton of food. After we loaded the trailer it felt like several tons! Last Sunday we were awarded two Can Home Town Hunger Awards. The award for the most groceries went to the Sanders Class. The award for the highest percentage based on class size went to the Webb Class. Everyone is to be commended for their generosity and the real winners will be our formerly hungry neighbors in South Macon.

Thank you

OUR CUP OVERFLOWS

Indeed, our cup does overflow. You have filled the cup of kindness and generosity again. This time it overflows with pencils and paper and an amazing offering of supplies. You answered the call to help our neighborhood children. Once again Vineville has stood in the gap to help children in our neighborhood have the basic supplies they need for school. Thank you for your generosity and for investing in the children. You are making a difference!

THE HIVE WAS BUZZING

Last Sunday, like every Sunday, Vineville was the place to BEE. We buzzed into the new school year with a bee theme. The children moved to their new Sunday School classes. The freshly renovated nurseries and preschool hall were open for tours. There was delicious food, wonderful decorations and terrific fellowship. It was a great morning.

Thanks to everyone who played a part in making it happen. Dawn and Richard Liipfert decorated and provided the refreshments. Layle Argo along with Bill and Nathan and Gina Watson helped with decorative art and curtains in the nurseries. Elbert and Lea McQueen, Mary Catherine Leigh, Ann Smith, and others volunteered time to unwrap and assemble toys. There was lots of staff involvement to make this dream a reality. Special thanks to Reese McCurry who gave great leadership and lots of hours to this project.

WHERE WILL VINEVILLE SERVE NEXT SUMMER?

Where will Vineville serve next summer? We want YOUR suggestions. Our Mission Steering Committee is meeting in a couple weeks to brainstorm ideas. Submit a mission location or area of service your passionate about for consideration to cda0724@hotmail.com by August 16th.

MAKE THE CHICE TO RAISE YOUR VOICE

Our Chancel Choir is back in session, and we would love for you to sing with us! There are no auditions and no expectation that you can read music; as a matter of fact, this choir call goes out specifically to anyone who has used the expression "Can't carry a tune in a bucket.", Singing is just a great way to engage with your church community, so if it's something that seems fun, don't hesitate to come to a couple of rehearsals before making a hard decision! If you're interested, we practice on Tuesday nights from 6:30-8pm. I so hope to see you there!

NEW PLAN - SAME MISSION

Due to a last minute conflict, LH Williams school was not able to offer the Back to School Teacher breakfast last Friday. Yet, we are not deterred. In its place, we will be preparing bag lunches for the LH Williams team on August 22. We’ll need volunteers to bake chocolate chip cookies in advance and to make sandwiches/pack bags here at Vineville UMC on August 22 at 9am. Can you help? Please email Teresa Edwards to say yes to this service opportunity. Thanks once more for all the ways you serve others in the name and the love of Christ.
