CFPB Updates Guidance on Lender Supervision
of Third-Party "Service Providers"

On October 19, 2016, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) issued a new bulletin entitled "
Compliance Bulletin and Policy Guidance; 2016-02, Service Providers
." This bulletin is significant for the title industry because it reissues guidance from
Bulletin 2012-03
, which made it clear that financial institutions are obligated to ensure their business arrangements with service providers do not present unwarranted risks to consumers. The requirements identified in the 2012-03 Bulletin are restated, word for word, in this newest bulletin. The CFPB has reminded financial institutions that they are required to take specific steps. A theme throughout this year's [MBA] convention was data automation and technology. Basically, the industry started to execute on plans that have long been needed. The industry started to innovate.
Just take two of the biggest announcements at the conference as an example: "
Fannie Mae announces sweeping program for mortgage lender 'freedom' from penalties" and "
Freddie Mac announces new tools designed to cut mortgage origination costs." Click

Virginia Title Teammate Participates on Industry Panel at VBA Women in Banking Conference
Patti Dickerson, Director of Operations & Marketing, represented Virginia Title Center at the VBA Women in Banking Conference held on November 9th at Hermitage Country Club in Richmond. More than 100 women from 30 institutions were in attendance.
This conference is designed for all women involved in the financial industry who would like to participate in engaging and thought provoking sessions on finding success in the industry. Topics included: Cultivating Your Personal Brand; Industry Issues Panel; Gender and Leadership; Economic Update; Women Leaders in Banking: Telling Their Story.
Patti participated on an Industry Issues Panel along with Jeff Szyperski, Chairman, President & CEO, Chesapeake Bank; Julie Sturt, Professional Development Coordinator, Essex Bank; Gaylon Layfield, President & CEO, Xenith Bank; and moderated by Bruce Whitehurst, President & CEO, Virginia Bankers Association. She shared her perspective on leadership and the importance of community involvement.
