Dear Friends,

ELEVATE Concord, Monument Impact’s family economic equity pilot, in collaboration with the City of Concord, has officially launched! We have selected 120 families and want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming response from applicants. The interest and enthusiasm surrounding the launch of ELEVATE Concord further proves the exigency for more of these pilots. It is a key tool to increase racial and economic equity in our communities. Our next step is to host orientations that will provide participants with all the information needed for the program. See below for some key demographics of our participants.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we continued to honor the stories of resilience, achievements of individuals and the collective strength that defines our community. On October 11, Monument Impact was honored at the annual Contra Costa Latinx Giving Circle.⁣ This gathering of 20 Latino Giving Circles across California is a collaboration to invest in and support Latino-led organizations. It is an honor to be acknowledged for our dedication to advocacy in our community and to receive an extra boost in resources for our programs. May we continue to uplift these voices everyday through our work.

In health news, Monument Impact is working with Lazarex Cancer Foundation’s Cancer Wellness as a ‘HUB Ambassador, where we will work with the other community partners to provide access to medical care. Read more about this below.

We will continue to keep our community members informed on our latest advocacy efforts and how you can get involved.

In community,

ELEVATE CONCORD

This month we are thrilled to meet with the 120 families selected to participate in ELEVATE Concord. We have hosted multiple orientation sessions to help participants familiarize themselves with the pilot. They will also participate in various surveys so we may capture their progress.

Here is a demographic snapshot of ELEVATE Concord participants:

We look forward to sharing stories and learnings from this next year. All this couldn’t have been possible without the support of our funders:

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Antioch

In a major win, Mayor Lamar Thorpe hosted a signing ceremony where he signed a new Anti-Tenant Harassment ordinance. The bill bans landlords from willingly causing harm to tenants by way of low-grade housing conditions, threats and intimidation, or refusal of rent. This is a massive achievement in strengthening housing protection in Antioch.

Watch the tenant anti-harassment signing ceremony with Antioch Mayor Thorpe.

Concord

The Concord city council held their meeting on October 10th to continue the discussion on the passing of rent stabilization and a Just Cause for eviction ordinances. We were able to secure victories such as rent increases to be capped at 3% or 60% of consumer price index (CPI) every year and building support from the council to prevent landlords from charging fees to tenants for petitioning against them. The majority of the Council rejected real estate lobbyists’ push to allow landlords to pass all the cost of renovations onto the tenants, and they also supported the right to return at the same cost for a tenant after renovations are completed. We are still working to increase the amount of relocation money a tenant receives.

Let’s continue to show up and support! Please join the next meeting on Tuesday, November 28th at 1950 Parkside Drive, Concord, CA.

California Passes Bill

to Limit Security Deposits to One Months Rent

In a significant win for California renters, this month, Governor Newsom signed into law AB 12 (Haney). In Contra Costa, we know families have faced displacement and barriers to moving due to high security deposits that have been two to three times monthly rent. In California, more than half of renters are able to afford their rent but are unable to get an apartment because they are not able to come up with two month's rent as a deposit. The new bill, which goes into effect July 1, 2024, ensures landlords can no longer charge more than one month’s rent for the security deposit.

We thank Governor Newsom and Assemblymember Matt Haney for their leadership and to our local representative Assemblymember Timothy Grayson for voting yes on AB 12. Our deepest gratitude also goes to everyone who contacted their legislators to ask for support. Your advocacy helps ensure more families in California have a place to call home.

HEALTHY COMMUNITY

Monument Impact is proud to be a part of Lazarex Cancer Foundation’s Lazarex Cancer Wellness HUB. Our Promotoras are serving as ‘HUB Ambassadors’ and collaborates with the community partners to improve access to quality cancer care and clinical trials. Since the initiation of this project, our team of Promotoras have successfully conducted 6 outreach events, where they interacted with 956 people and referred 51 community members. The HUB model aims to:

  • Provide equitable access to cancer resources:
  • Screening for earlier stage diagnosis.
  • No-cost genomic and molecular testing.
  • Insurance and financial support.
  • Convenient and reliable transportation.
  • Technology to navigate web-based information throughout the cancer journey.
  • Enhance emotional and financial well-being.
  • Collaborate with health-care providers and community based organizations to supply resources to educate patients and caregivers.

We are excited to work with the partners, Center for Human Development, Monument Crisis Center, Village Community Resource Center, Lazarex Cancer Foundation and John Muir Health on work that will continue our mission to provide equitable solutions for community members who have been historically underserved.
