USDA Announces $7.4M Grant for Agriculture Innovation

USDA seeks applications for grants to help rural businesses produce and market value-added products:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is accepting applications for grants to establish and operate Agriculture Innovation Centers. USDA is making $7.4 million available under the Agriculture Innovation Center Program. Agriculture Innovation Centers may use the grants to provide technical assistance to help agricultural producers develop and market value-added agricultural products using a variety of options, except joint marketing efforts. The centers may provide the following types of assistance:
- financial advisory services to develop, expand or operate a business owned by an agricultural producer;
- process development services, such as engineering, production system scale ups, scale production assessments and systems development;
- organizational assistance, including legal and technical advisory services;
- outreach assistance;
- technical assistance for product development, excluding research and development; and
- technical assistance for applied research to develop and operate processes and systems to produce and market value-added agricultural products.
The application deadline is September 27, 2021. State governments are among the eligible applicants.

State COVID Guidelines – Governor John Bel Edwards announced that any person entering a state building will be required to wear a mask. Further, it is recommended that Louisianans begin wearing masks in other indoors settings to help control the spread of COVID-19. In addition to the updated mask guidance, the Governor encouraged all businesses to review accommodations and urged testing after potential exposure.

Restaurant Revitalization Fund Update – Federal legislation was introduced this week to replenish the Restaurant Revitalization Fund. The ENTRÉE Act would provide additional funding to restart the program, which provided $28 billion to more than 100,000 restaurants, bars, and other food establishments nationwide. More than 278,000 applications were submitted, seeking more than $72 billion.

Gov. Edwards, Hunt Forest Products And Tolko Industries Announce New Sawmill In Bienville Parish
|
|
Gov. John Bel Edwards, Hunt Forest Products co-owner James D. Hunt and Tolko President and CEO Brad Thorlakson announced that the companies will develop a new $240 million sawmill in Bienville Parish. Resulting from the collaboration of these two companies, the joint venture company will create 130 new direct jobs, with an average salary of $57,400, plus benefits. Louisiana Economic Development estimates the new sawmill will result in 387 indirect jobs for a total of more than 500 new jobs in Louisiana’s Northwest Region. Approximately 300 construction jobs will be created.
