Merging Visions People's Choice Award Winners,
Extended Exhibit  and 2019 Info.

At the conclusion of the 2018 Merging Visions Exhibit held at the Medical City Lewisville Grand Theater, VAST and the Denton Poets Assembly (DPA) announced the winners of the People's Choice Awards.  During the exhibit, held over a five week period, the public was invited to select which artist and poet best paired their artwork and poetry.  There were 174 visitors participating in the voting.

The three pairings receiving the most votes by patrons of the exhibit were:
Carol Henry's painting, Clearwater Crossing
and Cache Boles' poem,  "Prairie Thunder."
Becca Hines' painting, Early Morning Risers
and her accompanying poem, "Planned Destinations."
Gail Cope's painting, Gorilla Madonna
and Lydia Alexander's poem, "Madonna of Humility."

Merging Visions catalogs will be offered for sale at VASTFest for $20.   Artists who participated in 2018 MV or were sponsors for the exhibit, may pick up their catalogs at that time, if they have not already done so.

Works in the 2018 Extended Exhibit will remain hanging in one of the branch libraries until Saturday, January 18. Artists and poets who have work in the Extended Exhibit will be notified in early December where their works are located.

Note for those participating in  2019 Merging Visions:
The critique for artwork will be held  in the large Program Room,  at South Branch Library on January 11,  9:00am - 12:30pm.  The critique is being offered by VAST for the artists participating in the Merging Visions Exhibition. The critic is Laurie Weller, Professor of Art, who is also the juror for the exhibition. All the art for Merging Visions will go through a jury process where you may be asked to make adjustments to your work, so this is an opportunity to get input from Laurie in advance at no charge to the artist.

Sam Ivie and Jonathan Reynolds
January 11 - March 23, 2019
This exhibit features the photography of Jonathan Reynolds and the paintings and drawings of Sam Ivie. This collaboration featuring Reynolds' photographs along with Ivie's images is the result of a plan to engage in more artist-organized two-person and group exhibits. Painted or drawn portraits have a unique way of functioning with landscape photography. Displayed alongside each other, the mediums of color photography and painting form a dynamic exhibit because of their differences. Both artists use photography, with the main variant being one's work is photography and the other's use of the medium is a means to an end. For Ivie, it is reference material he uses along with imagery he primarily invents; for Reynolds, it is the medium itself.

The time is from 10 A.M. until 1 P.M. at the Beulah Center and 9:30 - 12:30 at the PAAC. We bring something to work on and/or to share with our VADO friends. DALLAS (SMU) - November 5, 2018 - The Meadows Museum, SMU, is accepting applications now through January 31, 2019, from area artists for the Moss/Chumley North Texas Artist Award. The award is given annually to an outstanding North Texas artist who has exhibited professionally for at least ten years and who has a proven track record as an active community advocate for the visual arts. The cash prize for the award is $2,500. The award recipient will be invited to install work at the museum for approximately one month, and will also be given the opportunity to host a gallery talk; both activities would occur in 2019, but neither are required of the award recipient. The competition is accepting entries in the genres of drawing, painting, sculpture, assemblage, construction, video, photography, performance, and installation. To be eligible, an artist must reside in one of the following North Texas counties: Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, or Wise. To enter, visit www.meadowsmuseumdallas.org/about-us/mosschumley-award/ to download an application. For questions, contact Shelley DeMaria (214-768-4246; sdemaria@smu.edu).

The following individuals have been named to the jury for the 2018 award:

Moss and Chumley were two Dallas art dealers who made outstanding contributions to the visual arts in North Texas during the 1980s. The pair operated the Nimbus Gallery on Routh Street from 1980 to 1987 and the Moss/Chumley Gallery at the Crescent Court from 1986 to 1989, where they showcased numerous new artists. Established in 1995, the Moss/Chumley North Texas Artist Award is given in their memory.

Opportunity to Help: The Art Room
Marlys Lamar, Ph.D.

The Art Room is looking for donations of art supplies and art books, volunteer time, or money to support its development and opening. I am a psychologist and artist and I have a private practice office in the same building as Ravelin Bakery. Inside my office space is a large room that is The Art Room, an art studio space where people with mental health problems can create art.

My concept is that The Art Room will be an open studio for individuals to engage in the creative process, learn about and produce art, and that this involvement in the creative process will itself be therapeutic. I am not designing this to be an art therapy project, but an "art as therapy" or "art is medicine" project:  engaging in art is the therapy.  The purpose of this project is to promote emotional and psychological healing through art.

The Art Room is a non-profit project and the studio services will be free of charge to those individuals referred to the program. I intend to seek official nonprofit status as a 501(c)3 in the near future.  There is a website that will be launched soon and the URL will be  theartroomdenton.org.

Should you have any donations, a desire to participate through volunteering, or any questions about The Art Room, please contact Marlys Lamar, Ph.D. at  940-566-5802  or  940-231-3986. You can also send emails to  dr.mlamar@verizon.netThanks so much for any support you can give this project and please pass this information along to anyone you think might be interested.
