Julie Mortillaro Will Demonstrate Her Techniques for Collage.

Julie Mortillaro is a self-taught collage and mixed media artist who resides in Plano, Texas with her husband, two daughters and numerous pets. Her artwork has been featured in various exhibits throughout the DFW area and can also be found in private collections.

Mortillaro will be demonstrating how to create a torn paper collage from a reference photo or favorite drawing. She'll provide some examples on how to create a collage that looks like a "paper painting" as well as how to add more subtle collage elements to your artwork. How to make your own painted papers will be discussed and demonstrated so that your artwork will be truly one of a kind.

"Art About Town"  exhibition at The Chestnut Tree
Works by Isabel Cano and Dawn Swepston

Isabel Cano, artist statement:

I create art to share with the viewer a slice of what and how, I perceive my surroundings. My series "Flowers" is a study of shape, color, light and shadow.

I create these paintings to give the flowers a much longer life, in hopes that more people will get to see the one that captivated me. The purpose of the bigger scale is to create an impact that will force as many viewers as possible, to see the beauty that would otherwise go unnoticed.

The flowers are painted from pictures I have taken, of bouquets that my husband and I have received, flower departments at Kroger, Home Depot and other stores or in their natural environment.

Dawn Swepston is on a quest to re-brand the Old West, creating art with strong colors and dramatic contrasts to engage contemporary generations in thought about the challenges and conflicts of modern society and traditional Western values.

Her subject matter points to the decreased availability of, and access to, natural resources; rarified skies, pristine landscapes, and dazzling stars are remote to city dwellers enveloped in pollution. Both of her current series examine the
impact of physical, political and psychological borders on individuals and on society. Cowgirl boots and a playful flash of skin, while superficially sensuous, point to issues of racial identity, immigration, women's roles, and changing family structures.
Ms. Swepston's award winning work has been selected for many regional and national shows and is included in both public and private collections.

Jurors: Carlyn Ray and Mark Whitmarsh

Carlyn Ray was recently named as one of Dallas' top 14 emerging artists and is featured in the current and prior issue of Patron Magazine for her participation in Artists Vs Architects. As an emerging hot glass artist and founder of Carlyn Ray designs, she opened her studio in the summer of 2013. As a former employee of Dale Chihuly, she was part of his team as they created such masterpieces as the unforgettable Chihuly exhibit at the Dallas Arboretum.

Mark Whitmarsh was born in Denver, Colorado, studied art at the University of Wyoming and the Rocky Mountain School of Art and Design in Denver. He has lived and painted in Dallas, Texas for over twenty years. "As I build layers of color, a personal iconography evolves on the painted surface. I'm interested in a surface that has a rich patina with a modern ancestry. By adding and subtracting layers, a genesis over time is revealed." Mark's work has been featured in various publications including Art in America, Art Net Encyclopedia of Living Artists, the Dallas Observer and Southwest Art Magazine.
