What’s the Best Grind for Your Cup?

Urth Caffé offers our world-famous heirloom (non-GMO) organic coffee beans to purchase—either whole bean or ground—with 9 grind level options to choose from. Here’s a little tutorial on our recommended in-house grind levels for specific types of coffee preparation.

Grind levels range from very fine to course and at Urth Caffé, when coffee beans are ground in-house just for you, the grind range options are 1-9 (with “1” being the finest grind, and “9” being the coarsest). Grind levels on your home grinder may differ from this, depending on the type of grinder you use, but look for more on this in our upcoming blog.

Our classic Urth Italia™ Espresso should be ground fine at a level 2 or 3 for a delicious, rich, chocolaty, nuanced espresso experience. And the same goes for our Urth Dolce™ Espresso—for a floral aroma and sparkling butterscotch flavor.

Below please find our in-house grind recommendations for some other popular coffee brewing methods:

Depending on which pourover method you are using. Hario V60, Melitta, Kalitta Wave, Clever Dripper are between 5 and 6, and Chemex is courser, closer to 6.5 – 7.

Cold Brew is similar to the grind for French Press but could be slightly finer than French Press if desired. Depends on extraction time (12 to 24 hours) and method of filtration. Finer grinds require less extraction time.

Of course, your grind level will also depend on your personal taste and the nuances you wish to coax out of your special cup!
