National Urban League's 'Physics of Sound' Day engaged 350 participants!


The hands-on STEM event, powered by Cox Enterprises and executed by STEM NOLA, took place on July 25 at Xavier University.

The National Urban League's Youth Leadership Summit 2024 - 'Building a Village: Putting We Before Me'

On July 25, 2024, Xavier University of Louisiana became the epicenter of innovation and leadership as it hosted the 34th Annual National Urban League's Youth Leadership Summit 2024. This year’s summit, themed 'Building a Village: Putting We Before Me,' offered an exceptional platform for youth to engage in transformative learning and prepare for the future. Over five action-packed days, students from over 30 Urban League Affiliates connected, learned, and grew together, embracing the summit’s focus on leadership and personal development.

'The Physics of Sound' STEM Day

83 volunteers exposed, engaged and inspired 257 students with interactive, hands-on STEM activity.


A standout feature of this year’s summit was 'The Physics of Sound', a STEM NOLA executed event held on Thursday, July 25th. The day, sponsored by Cox Enterprises, engaged 247 kids from grades 6th through 12th (96% were in the 9th through 12 grades) and was dedicated to exploring the science of sound through interactive and hands-on activities.


Volunteers included 37 college students and 46 professionals committing 246 mentor hours to the event. Participants delved into the intricacies of acoustics, building their own Bluetooth speakers and experiencing the principles of sound firsthand.

With help from his robots, Dr. Calvin Mackie provided an inspirational address to participants


Dr. Calvin Mackie, CEO and founder of STEM NOLA | STEM Global Action, delivered an inspirational address on the importance of STEM education in the 21st century. His presentation highlighted the critical role STEM NOLA | STEM Global Action play in exposing, engaging and inspiring future innovators, creators, makers and entrepreneurs -- while he captivated the audience with demonstrations of robots, further emphasizing the excitement and relevance of STEM fields.

Leadership from the National Urban League and Cox Enterprises welcomed participants to STEM Day


Adding to the day’s impact, Adenike Huggins, Senior Director, Education Policy and Advocacy from the National Urban League (left) and Shawan Allen, Community Impact Manager, Cox Enterprises (right), spoke about the crucial need for STEM education in meeting the demands of an evolving workforce. Their messages reinforced the significance of providing students with opportunities to engage in STEM activities and develop skills that will serve each them and their employers in their future careers.

Cox Enterprises illustrated the science and engineering behind SMART Homes and SMART Cities

The summit’s theme of 'Building a Village: Putting We Before Me' resonated deeply throughout the hands-on event, emphasizing collaboration and community.
