Moonshot May

May is Cancer Research Month, and this year, the Upstate Carolina NCORP Moonshot team had a significant presence at the National Cancer Institute’s campus in Rockville, Maryland, participating in the Participant and Provider Engagement Workshop! The workshop aimed to assess the Cancer Moonshot SM Biobank study progress and provide opportunities for engagement with local engagement sites to discuss successful engagement approaches and best practices for engagement in biobanking. Our local engagement project, now in its third year, remains a cornerstone of our efforts. Its primary goal is to support continued efforts to enroll and engage Black/African American patients diagnosed with cancer in the Moonshot Biobank protocol, a mission that we all share and are deeply committed to.

Upstate Carolina NCORP Moonshot Engagement Team includes Dr. Amy Curtis, Dr. Tondre Buck, Melyssa Foust, and Audrianna Carrington. During the two full-day sessions, the Upstate Carolina Moonshot team presented on “Gibbs’ Engagement Mission” and was integral to moderating three breakout sessions. Audrianna led the session on strategies and tools for individual and community engagement. Dr. Buck led the session, focusing on communicating the benefits of research participation to patients and physicians. Lastly, Dr. Curtis and Melyssa led the session that focused on coordinating across the medical institutions to screen, enroll, and follow patients.

We were also fortunate to have the most engaged Hematopathology Precision Medicine supervisor, Mr. Ryan Sevener, join us. His expertise and dedication to our fresh tissue biospecimen collections, specifically hematological malignancies, have been invaluable. We are truly grateful for his contributions and the contributions of all our team members and collaborators.

Enjoy snapshots from the Moonshot Engagement Workshop, and our current accruals, patient demographics, and biospecimens!
