Citywide Updates

Celebrate Pride Month this June

Pride Month is here! Celebrate the LGBTQ+ community with fun events and activities for the whole family. Supporting the City Council priority Community Health, Safety, Wellness, and Belonging, programs include family storytimes, an English as a Second Language conversation group, karaoke for teens, book lists, a listening forum with the County, and more. Connect with the community and celebrate Pride all monthlong.

City Council 2024 Priorities Community Update Series: Economic Development & Transition

In 2024 the City Council set Economic Development & Transition as one of four Council Priorities to continue to support our local economy. This update provides a summary of efforts including developing a permanent Cal Ave. car-free streetscape design, initiating a car-free streetscape design for Ramona St., finalizing pre-approved parklet designs and implementing an ongoing program, plus advancing a downtown parking garage and affordable housing, building out the Palo Alto Fiber pilot phase 1 with grid modernization, advancing a retail strategy and more.

Palo Alto Airport Meeting in June + Upcoming Online Survey

The City is updating the Palo Alto Airport Long-Range Facilities and Sustainability Plan, which will determine the extent, type, and schedule of improvements needed for the next 20 years. At the open house-style meeting on June 20, explore the improvements alternatives, provide your feedback, ask questions, and gain an update on next steps. Plus, stay tuned for an upcoming online survey available mid-June. Community input and guidance helps to continue to inform this strategic planning process.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Though May is about to end, and Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, it’s important to remember to always take care of your mental health. Self-care is mental health care. It’s ok to take the time and space you need to help yourself. A great way to practice self-care is spending time in nature – take a hike at one of many beautiful Palo Alto open spaces or parks. You can also help the community by getting a Mental Health First Aid certification at the training series beginning June 8 and learn how to support others in a mental health crisis. Find more resources to Be Well, follow our Be Well section in this newsletter, and share these resources with the community around you. Be Well, Palo Alto!

Be Well

Citywide Yard Sale: Don't miss out on this year’s Citywide Yard Sale on Saturday, June 1, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reusing is one of the best ways to reduce waste and keep usable items out of the landfill. Reducing and reusing also helps support wellness and well being. Registered sale addresses and merchandise will be included in this week’s Palo Alto Weekly newspaper and available online.

Be Mindful: By being aware of all that’s going on around you – inside and what’s happening around you – helps you to experience life moment by moment. Mindfulness practices may help manage stress, cope with illness, and reduce anxiety and depression. Palo Alto City Library hosts multiple mindfulness classes, meditations, Tai Chi workshops and more each month to support our community health. Check out these events and bring a friend or neighbor with you!

Recipe of the Week: Inspired by World Otter Day (May 29), this recipe for steamed mussels in garlic white wine broth is the perfect way to welcome summer. Mussels, a favorite food of these playful sea creatures, cook quickly and are easy to prepare, even for new cooks. Plus, cleaning tips for stress-free memories in the kitchen. While otters are known for being adorable and playful, they’re also vital to the health of kelp forests, so next time you come across an otter or enjoy some tasty mussels, be sure to send some love and appreciation for all they do to support a healthy planet!
