 Dasa and Vachana Day

The Haridasa devotional movement, led by several saints and mystics helped shape the culture, philosophy and art of South India in general and Karnataka in particular by exerting considerable spiritual influence over the masses. Purandara Dasa is widely regarded as the "Pitamaha" of Carnatic music. He and the other Haridasas such as Kanaka Dasa and Vijaya Dasa contributed immensely to the Dasa Saahitya.

Vachana Saahitya is a form of rhythmic writing in Kannada that evolved in the 11th and 12th century A.D. Vachanas literally means "(that which is) said". These are readily intelligible prose texts. Social reformers such as Madara Chennaiah and Basavanna are among the foremost contributors to Vachana Saahitya.
