Keeping You Informed Of Chinese Culture In Colorado Springs

Newsletter  December 2023| Issue 2023-12

The Great Books in Chinese (Part 3)

In the previous two newsletters, we introduced the Chinese classics, The Four Great Books, and Chinese Nobel Literature Prize winners. In this newsletter, we will introduce some fun Chinese writers and their sci-fi works.

The most known Chinese writer in the sci-fi world is Mr. Cixin Liu with his work "The Three-Body Problem," translated by Ken Liu. This trilogy starts with a signal sent out to space in a chaotic China under the Cultural Revolution which eventually attracts aliens living on a destructive planet to move to Earth. The story will lead you to an end that you will never be able to imagine. Mr. Liu's trilogy won the Hugo Award in 2015 from the World Science Fiction Society. Netflix will release a TV series based on this novel in March 2024 by the creators of Game of Thrones. The video below shows the teaser.

Two additional Chinese sci-fi writers also won the Hugo Award. Ms. Jingfang Hao won the Best Novelette with "Folding Beijing" in 2016 (click here to read it). Mr. Hai Ya won the Best Novelette for 2023 with his work "The Space-Time Painter."

You can find more Chinese sci-fi writers and their works here.

The 24 Solar Terms:

Winter Solstice, December 21 (dōng zhì 冬至)

On this day, the daytime is the shortest and the nighttime is the longest of the year. Some traditional Chinese activities include eating dumplings and lamb to add nutrition and energy for winter.

Fantasy and Sci-Fi Movies from China

While many contemporary Chinese sci-fi writers are emerging, the tradition of creating fantasy stories in China can be traced back hundreds of years in books such as Creation of Gods and Classic of Mountains and Seas. A newly released movie this year, based on Creation of Gods, might provide complementary views of the past and future.

It’s almost time for the mythical Dragon to shine as we enter 2024!

This year, the Bee Vradenburg Foundation has generously offered to match dollar-for-dollar donations made to the Colorado Springs Chinese Cultural Institute for our special New Year Celebration, the Year of the Wood Dragon.

We are excited to host the event at a new venue; the Ent Center for the Arts at University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Now more than ever, your financial support is needed with ticket sales covering only half the cost of the festival. With this giving season, we hope you consider the impact of sponsoring a local community event and how the Chinese New Year brings exposure to traditional art, music, drummers, dancers, and food.

To make this event possible each year with increasing costs, we are reaching out to donors like you to help us make a difference. Each year, we strive to bring you the best experience in Colorado Springs and proudly showcase the unique talents of local Asian Artists.
