Leaves affect the Health of Rivers and Streams

As the rain falls and flows through the piles of leaves, phosphorus quickly leaches out of leaves much like a tea bag in water. This “leaf tea” makes its way to our local waterways through the storm sewer system.

As we head into October and November, what can we do with our fallen leaves?

Keep our streets and storm drains clear of leaves, participate in the Village's leaf collection program, fertilize our lawns naturally with mulched leaves, and compost leaves to use in the garden!
