Winner is the River
Communities along the Mississippi River are pledging to clean the river this spring, and so are we. The Mighty Mississippi Cleanup won't succeed without you, though. Local simultaneous events for Red Wing and Goodhue County are being held at Colvill Park and at Sturgeon Lake Road and County Road 18. You're welcome to join at either location. The events are scheduled for Earth Day, April 22, with a rain/flood date of May 20. Trash bags are provided, but please bring gloves and closed toed shoes. We can't wait to see you as we work together to ensure the winner is the river.

Visit the Waste Campus for Free Firewood!
Need a load of wood for some backyard bonfires or even to fill your woodstove at home? Don't pay for it; get it for free from the Waste Campus on Bench Street! Stop by during open hours, and swing into the office to sign a waiver. After that, cut up and haul away as much as you want for FREE. Red Wing's Paul Bunyan shows you how to do it in the following video. You want it, stop by and get it from the Waste Campus today.
Dealing With Debris
leaves being raked away from a street storm drain
Spring is here and most people are itching to get in their yards and clean up the debris winter left behind, but here’s the thing. Many people sweep their leaves, sticks, and leftover driveway salt into the street, thinking street sweepers will pick it up. Inevitably, all those pollutants end up in the river, contributing to a serious problem. Put the salt in the garbage, but not the leaves or sticks. Yard waste can't go in the trash, but you can drop it off at the Waste Campus on Bench Street instead. They’ll turn it into free compost for the community to enjoy – a win for everyone.
Report Card Stats of the Week
Here's another City Beat Stat from the digital Red Wing Report Card. In Goodhue County in 2023, one working adult supporting two children would need to earn $42.71 per hour to make a living wage. For two working adults supporting two children, each adult would need to earn $23.49 per hour. (A living wage is the minimum income required to provide basic needs without financial assistance.) Starting in January 2023, Minnesota’s minimum wage is $8.63 for small companies and $10.59 for large companies – significantly lower than the living wage.
Have a Wheel-y Great Time This May
Bike puns are pretty tire-d, so we'll give it a brake for a while. That will give us just enough time to tell you all about this year's Bike Rodeo. Kids will again have a chance to learn bike safety, meet Red Wing Police Department officers, and win great prizes! It's all happening at the Law Enforcement Center parking lot on Saturday, May 20. Mark your calendars, and share the word with friends and family. We can't guarantee a bike-pun-free zone at the event, but we hope you won't hold it against our spokes-people.

Safe Routes to School
Speed limit 15 sign
Routes to two Red Wing schools will be soon be safer thanks to new school zone speed limits Sunnyside Elementary is set to be surrounded by 15 and 20 mph zones, and Twin Bluff Middle School would get 20 mph zones on city roads. The road west of the roundabout by Twin Bluff Middle School is a county road, where Goodhue County has indicated a willingness to create a 30 mph zone. See maps with proposed locations of the new signage here. Signage is expected to be in place by the beginning of the next school year. Crossing improvements with ADA compliant pedestrian ramps and bump outs at the Twin Bluff Road/Spruce Drive/Hallstrom Drive intersection between the two schools are also planned. All these improvements are supported by a $240,000 Safe Routes to School Infrastructure Grant, and we're excited to see them implemented.
