CUGH 2025 ABSTRACT ADVISING PROGRAM (AAP)

For the CUGH 2025 Conference (February 20-23, 2025) the CUGH Education Committee, Research Committee, and Secretariat are supporting the third year of the Abstract Advising Program (AAP) to connect early career CUGH members (Advisees) with more experienced CUGH members (Advisors). Once linked, the advisor and advisee will work together in relatively brief, focused interaction to improve the quality of the abstract prior to submission for the CUGH conference. The goals are:

  1. to provide guidance to early-career members (advisees) in improving abstract quality,
  2. to provide a service opportunity for more experienced members (advisors),
  3. to improve the quality of abstracts submitted to CUGH.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Potential Advisees must be CUGH members (individual or institutional) seeking guidance to improve their abstract prior to submission for the 13th Annual CUGH Conference. They must be committed to reaching out to the advisor with whom they are matched, taking the guidance offered into consideration prior to submission, sharing the final abstract, and informing the advisor of the abstract outcome (i.e., accepted, rejected, not submitted).
  • Potential Advisors must be CUGH members (individual or institutional) and commit to providing high-quality and timely abstract guidance to the advisee with whom they are matched. To ensure that advisors have an appropriate baseline level of experience, potential advisors must have been the first author on at least five abstracts that have been accepted at national or international conferences. Advisors should also attend their advisees’ abstract presentation at the conference.

To participate, fill out the Abstract Advising Form below.

The deadline to complete this form is August 3, 2024.

NEW WORLD BANK REPORT: "STOPPING THE GRAND PANDEMIC: A FRAMEWORK FOR ACTION - ADDRESSING ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE (AMR) THROUGH WORLD BANK OPERATIONS"

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health security and development challenge that poses a threat to public health and economic prosperity. The challenge of combating AMR is poised to strike low- and middle-income nations with disproportionate severity. In 2019, almost 5 million deaths were associated with AMR, more than the number of deaths attributed to AIDS, HIV, and malaria—making AMR one of the world’s biggest killers.

The World Bank’s AMR Framework for Action proposes specific interventions to address the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance in WBG operations. It identifies 20 key interventions across the One Health spectrum, and shows actions governments can take to address AMR.

THE UC INSTITUTE ON GLOBAL CONFLICT AND COOPERATION

The UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) is a research network comprised of scholars from across the University of California and the Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories who produce and use research to help build a more peaceful, prosperous world. With a focus on traditional and emerging security threats, including nuclear weapons policy, security cooperation, environmental threats, great power competition, and threats to democracy, IGCC builds diverse, multidisciplinary research teams that analyze the causes and consequences of global conflict—and help develop solutions. View IGCC At A Glance to learn more.

Global health issues are also woven throughout IGCC's work. See below for information about IGCC's work in global health and governance.

  • Pandemics and Democracy, an interview with George Rutherford, an infectious disease specialist and professor of epidemiology at UC San Francisco, and Kim Yi Dionne, a political scientist at UC Riverside who studies health, on the IGCC podcast, Talking Policy.
  • Populists are Attacking Science to Undermine Global Governance, an IGCC blogpost that shows how far-right populists are downplaying the importance of scientific data and withholding data necessary for global response to public health crisis. We also published an accompanying working paper.
  • The Spread of (Mis)information: A Social Media Experiment in Pakistan, a working paper by IGCC affiliate Arman Rezaee at UC Davis that shows that attempts by social media platforms to limit the spread of COVID-19 misinformation may lead to less platform users, which has the unintended effect of reducing user exposure to official COVID-19 information.
