Chicago, like other major cities across the country, is seeing an uptick in crime that rightly has all of us upset. When the 23rd and 19th Police Districts merged back in 2012, the ongoing concern has been a drop in the number of police after the merger took place.

During this week's budget hearings, I brought up this concern about the need for more police for the 19th District to address the gap when the merger occurred. Police Supt. Garry McCarthy informed us that he, too, agreed that more police were needed for this district. Part of the issue has been the bidding process for police to come into the 19th District, but the Superintendent pledged to work through with this. Additionally, I asked the commander to provide us with a number of police officers we could expect for the 19th District, along with a timeline when we could expect for that to occur. I made clear that I want regular updates about progress to make this happen.

Addressing crime involves many different stakeholders all working together, we are fortunate to have so many residents active with CAPS to help make that happen. However, we also need more police and I'm pleased that this will be happening.
