Dear Chelsey,

Happy Spring to everyone in the Chilkat Valley!

Update on the Ripinksi Trail Easement

Haines Huts and Trails contacted the UA Land team about a potential easement through University land in the Chilkat Valley. After researching the deed for the parcel that is bisected by the Seven Mile Saddle portion of Ripinski Trail, specifically HA.HH.0004, we have determined that there is no need for an easement. We continue to support the efforts of Haines Huts to increase recreation in the region.

Next Steps on the Carbon Credit Program

Thank you again to all who took the time to submit comments to the public notice about the university’s potential carbon credit program. The response from the Land Management team went out recently, and you can check the interactive map to see more detail.

As we mentioned earlier, the next step is seeking a developer to administer the program for the university. We will have more details about the program after the developer submits a plan. The developer may determine that one or more parcels identified in the public notice are not suited for carbon offset credits. In that case, the parcel will be removed from the program; however, the public notice will remain in effect on the parcel. The developer may recommend additional lands for inclusion into a program. In that case, any additional lands will have a public notice in a similar process as this one.

Establishing a carbon credit program is just one part of what the UA Land team is planning for development in the Chilkat Valley, which is why not all of the lands were included for carbon sequestration. We are still exploring many of the revenue streams that are important to all of you — small-scale timber sales, biomass innovation, subdivisions, conservation easements and more. We continue to support our fiduciary responsibility of monetizing the university’s land assets to fund the university’s endowment while stimulating the local economy. If you know of other opportunities that you think the Land Management team should explore, we are always eager to hear from you.

Congratulations to the newest UA Scholars!

Over the weekend, the University published a special insert of the 2023 class of UA Scholars in newspapers around the state, including Alison Benda, MacKenzy Dryden, and Marin Hart from the Chilkat Valley!

Did you know…?

  • Earnings from the Land Grant Trust Fund are used to fund the UA Scholars Program which awards $12,000 scholarships to the top ten percent of high school graduates.
  • To date, the UA Land team’s property development activities have helped to fund more than 9,000 students with scholarships.

You can learn more about their amazing stories here.

Maps of University land holdings

Just a reminder that an interactive map of all current university land holdings is available on the homepage of the UA Land website, or you can click here to view and download a map of the Chilkat Valley.
