February 2, 2016

January begins with an array of promises and resolutions, all well intentioned. By the end of January, however, many of those promises we made have not been fulfilled. The new diet was not successful or the commitment to work fewer hours did not materialize- so why even bother. According to the Statistic Brain Research Institute, 45% of Americans set New Year's goals while only 8% achieve them.

How can you be a part of the successful 8%? Change your goals- make them smaller, more incremental and achievable. Don't set yourself up to fail! Then celebrate each success. If you don't achieve what you set out to accomplish, ask what you could do differently, what would make it more likely to succeed next time? Experiment with yourself to see what does and does not work, and use your successes to motivate you even more.

Set SMARRT Goals: Specific; Measurable; Achievable; Realistic and well Resourced; Time limited.
Set Clear Written Goals. Are You Aware That:
  • A Harvard Business study showed that those with written goals are three times more likely to succeed than those with a plan in their head.
  • Roadblocks are not failures. Finding workarounds is part of the process.
  • Research shows that goals are most effective when challenging.
  • Visualizing the positive outcome can create new neural pathways in the brain to help achieve the goal.

  • Take Action and Get Positive Results
    • Set positive goals.
    • Identify your strengths and use them to overcome your challenges.
    • Share your goals with select friends and family; it helps sustain motivation.
    • Visualize what will be different for you when you achieve your goal.
    • Periodically evaluate and measure progress to stay on track.
    • Let go of negativity.
Remember: you cannot change other people, you can only change yourself.
