Dear Parents,

I hope you and your children are enjoying your summer. In this note, I want to remind you of a few things happening while school is out: Summer Reading at New York Libraries and the Summer Food Service Program.

Summer Reading is going on now at libraries across New York. Children and teens participating in the program receive book recommendations and engage in educational activities at their local libraries. The program is a fun way to prevent summer learning loss. When kids read over the summer, they build their reading skills and will be better prepared for the upcoming school year. Visit a library near you today to sign up your child. Find out more here .

The Summer Food Service Program is also now up and running at more than 3,000 sites across the State. Each day this summer, approximately 400,000 free meals will be served to children. The interactive USDA online map has been updated this year to provide an easy-to-use tool for families to find a meal site by address, city or zip code. You can read more about free summer meals here .

Additionally, for those of you on social media, I encourage you to check out our Twitter feed for ideas on what to do with your kids during summer vacation. On Twitter, you can search the hashtag #educationvacation to find suggestions including museums, science centers, and parks. The Museum of Play in Rochester was featured recently - it's home to the Toy Hall of Fame! Our Twitter handle is @NYSEDNews. Follow us for the latest NYSED news, if you don't already.

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,

MaryEllen Elia
