Sunset Cruise on the Sound

Proceeds benefit New London Arts Council

Thursday, August 29th | 6:30PM


Take in the bold colors, see the view of the shore from the water and make some fantastic memories watching the sunset on this cruise down the Thames River and into the Long Island Sound. Proceeds from ticket sale will benefit New London Arts Council and help them continue to encourage and serve a vibrant and inclusive arts community.


Pair your stunning excursion to Ledge Light and back with dinner and a drink downtown or pack a cooler and snacks to enhance your experience.

Mohegan Life on the Thames

The first inhabitants along the western side of the Massapequatuck (Thames) River — the Mohegan tribe — settled here from the time of Sachem Uncas’ birth toward the end of the 16th century. Led by Tribal member Joe Smith, their stories demonstrate how crucial the Thames River was for food, wildlife, transportation, and trade as well as their relationship with the colonists. Military on the Thames

For centuries New London harbor has guarded the Thames and entry to Long Island Sound, with Navy and Coast Guard installations, the ship building industries that support them, as well as two forts that have seen battles, defeats and the birthplace of the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. Former City of Groton Mayor Marian Galbraith & Retired Naval Capt. Paul Whitescarver lead this tour together and collaborate on a shared love of the region.

Whaling Tales from the Thames

Once the second largest whaling port in the world, New London has a rich history of seamen who made their living exploiting the ocean’s bounty. Over 257 whaling ships made more than 1,100 whaling expeditions out of the Thames River. Become immersed in the stories of whaling captains and crews, the city’s dependency on the whaling industry, and the vulnerability of the seamen’s families while the men were out at sea while cruising the Thames River. The Friends of Fort Griswold Battlefield will hold a candlelight ceremony commemorating the 1781 Battle of Groton Heights. The ceremony is free of charge and the public is encouraged to attend. In the event of rain, the event will be cancelled. If you plan to attend, please bring lawn chairs.

Primarily an agricultural market, Groton Farmers Market also includes a variety of local baked goods, seafood/fish, meats, poultry/eggs grown in Connecticut. Foods and food products must be identified as organic, or not, and include place of origin. The aim of the market, which runs weekly through October, is to make accessible, affordable, healthy, locally-produced food available to the community.
