February 24, 2023

Dear 43rd Ward Neighbors,

In our continuing commitment to making the 43rd Ward Office more accessible and bringing services into the community, we’re excited to announce the locations for “Ward Walks” in three neighborhoods. These walks are a great way for constituents of all ages to get involved in services and infrastructure. My staff and I will be there to listen to suggestions related to our infrastructure menu funding, give a quick tutorial on my favorite app CHI311, and be onsite to address constituent services needs. Join us if you can!

The meeting locations will be:

  • Thursday, March 9, 2023 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Gold Coast. Meeting at the SE corner of North Boulevard and State Parkway

  • Friday, March 10, 2023 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Mid-North. Meeting at Adams Park at 1919 N Seminary

  • Thursday, March 16, 2023 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Wrightwood. Meeting outside of New Life Church at 1110 W Lill.

This past week, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) provided ten locations for strategic cameras in our ward. As we have previously discussed in this newsletter and in our recent Conversation with the Commanders, these cameras deter crime from occurring and are useful tools for police to build cases and make arrests. The locations provided by CPD are equally split between the 18th and 19th Districts and lie mostly in commercial corridors that have had a history of previous criminal incidents. We will continue to update you as these cameras are placed and as other strategic safety investments are made from our ward office.

Also related to safety, please reference the police advisory below regarding the antisemitic “Day of Hate” being planned by neo-Nazi extremists. I will keep saying it - hate has absolutely no place in the 43rd Ward, in Chicago or anywhere in our world. As your alderman, I have stood and will continue to stand strongly with our Jewish community. As hateful rhetoric is on the rise, we will use our collective strength to fight against it loudly and together.

To end on a more hopeful note on what’s great about our community, this week I had a hard-hitting meeting with Miss Elena’s wonderful blended first to third grade class at Oscar Mayer School. We got right to business: discussing our ward’s upcoming park renovations, what “government funding” means, and our favorite 43rd Ward shops. Our community is such a special place to grow up, and I treasure these meetings with our kids!

Sincerely,

Alderman Timmy Knudsen

Police Advisory - Antisemitic Day of Hate

February 25th, 2023

Chicago Police have recently issued an advisory to all Chicagoans, but specifically Jewish Chicagoans to be “extra vigilant” this upcoming weekend. A neo-nazi group has called February 25th, their “Day of Hate.” Their statement says:

“The Chicago Police Department is aware of the online posts regarding February 25, 2023… At this time, there is no actionable intelligence and we continue to actively monitor the situation. We are regularly in contact with members, leaders and organizations within the Jewish community and all faith-based communities in Chicago, and will continue working closely with them to strengthen communication and safety.”

The hateful messaging encourages vandalizing property, putting up stickers, flyers, drop banners, and taking videos or pictures of the attacks to post online. If you see any evidence of these actions or other suspicious activity, please call 9-1-1 immediately.

I stand with Jewish neighbors across the Ward and Chicago. This horrific rhetoric and threats are a disgusting reminder of the rise in anti-semitism across our country. Late last year, the Chicago City Council passed an ordinance that spoke out against this rise in hate speech. Thank you to Alderman Silverstein for spearheading this resolution.

Public Safety

Upcoming CAPS Meetings

We work closely with the 43rd Ward’s local CAPS districts, which include the 18th (Near North) and 19th (Town Hall) Police Districts.

Our office is in frequent contact with officers from both of these districts and their local CAPS officers, who host a variety of community forums and events including beat meetings, informational settings, and expert panel discussions, as well as sending out community alerts when a pattern of crime is detected.

Beat Meetings are part of the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy and an excellent way to hear directly from CPD about your neighborhood. Meetings are held in the evenings every two months. Click here and find out your Police District and Beat number.

Community Events

City of Chicago Chore Services Program

The City of Chicago expanded their Chore Services Program that supports older adults 60 years old and older recently released from the hospital, experiencing illness and/or experiencing difficulty with completing household tasks due to physical or cognitive limitations. Short term in-home support (assistance with cleaning, laundry and self-care) and heavy-duty cleaning inclusive of the removal of excessive clutter is offered.

This year they are expanding services to also include extermination, lawn care and snow removal services to older adults that are homeowners and that meet existing Chore program eligibility requirements. Rental apartment units are not included under the newly expanded services given that rental property maintenance is the responsibility of landlord property owners.

For referral and a scheduled eligibility assessment, older adults or their caregivers may contact the Senior Services Division Information and Assistance call center at 312-744-4016 or email aging@cityofchicago.org.

Board of Appeal Tax Workshop

Thursday, March 2

Join staff from Cook County Commissioner Bridget Degnen's office in-person at the our office for assistance with filing property assessment appeals to the Board of Review on Thursday, March 2nd, 2023. Your assessment is one key piece in determining your property tax bill. Filing appeal is an opportunity to have the Board of Review take a second look at your assessment to determine if your assessment should be lowered prior to calculating your upcoming FY2022 2nd Installment property tax bill.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Appeals can only be filed with our office for residential properties with 6 or fewer units. Our office will not be able to assist you in filing an appeal for commercial properties or apartment or condo buildings with more than 6 units. Those appeals must be filed with an authorized attorney to appeal the building's assessment as a whole.
  • Appeals can be submitted once a year to both the Assessor's Office and the Board of Review. If you submitted an appeal earlier this year to the Assessor's office, you may still file an appeal with the Board of Review.
  • This appeals window is for your FY2022 assessment, which will affect your 2nd installment property tax bill, due later in 2023. This will have no impact on the FY2021 tax bills that were due December 30, 2022.
