Washington County Triggers LFP (Livestock Forage Disaster Program) and ELAP (Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honey, Bees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program) through the Farm Service Agency
The Washington County Extension Office received notice last week from the Farm Service Agency that they county was added to the disaster declaration triggering producer eligibility for the Livestock Forage Disaster Program and Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honey, Bees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program. Producers are encouraged to visit the link below to learn more and reach out to the Austin/Washington County FSA Office by calling (979) 865-3138.
Forage Testing for Nitrates and Prussic Acid
As drought conditions worsen and forage availability continues to decline the Washington County Extension Office has fielded a number of producer calls and office visits about testing forages (standing and baled) for nitrates and prussic acid. We have worked with TAMU Livestock Specialists and put together information for a lab that will complete nitrate, prussic acid, and dry matter evaluation for a reasonable price with a quick turnaround. Visit our Washington County Drought webpage for all the details including forms, sampling instructions, shipping labels, and a guide on interpreting the sample results.

Ag Pesticide Applicator Update 2022
COVID-19 Pandemic
(GRACE PERIOD ENDS 12.31.2022)
In response to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) is extending this exemption of agriculture Continuing Education Unit (CEU) requirements. To address the CEU’s and licensure requirements for Ag Pesticide applicators, the TDA will work with the ag pesticide applicators and CEU course providers of Texas during this critical time. Licensed applicators with expiring licenses or needing CEU’s will be allowed to renew their license even if they have not met their CEU requirement for their current licensing period through December 31, 2022.

Upcoming Events

South Central Texas Ag Conference (CEUs)

November 16, 2022

Pull out those yellow cards and take a second glance at the expiration date! Renewal time for pesticide applicators is quickly approaching and it’s time to get those last minute continuing education units collected before it’s too late. Private pesticide applicators are required to have 15 hours of Continuing Educations Units every 5 years to renew their Texas Department of Agriculture issued license. Of the fifteen required hours two must be in Integrated Pest Management, two in Laws and Regulations, and the remaining can be in any combination of General, Integrated Pest Management, or Laws and Regulations.

If you are looking for hours mark your calendar for Wednesday, November 16, 2022. The AgriLife Extension Offices of Grimes, Lee, Waller, and Washington Counties are excited to host the second in a series of Ag Conferences that will feature timely topics for landowners, continuing education units for pesticide applicators, and the opportunity to network with landowners and producers in the South Central Texas area.

Bees and Trees for Homeowners (CEUs)

November 18, 2022

Washington County

The November meeting for the 2022 series will take place on Friday, November 18, 2022, at Blinn College in Brenham! Beekeeping continues to be a hot topic, especially for medium to small acreage landowners. Before you jump in head-first and order the equipment and a hive of bees, come learn what to expect! We will hear from several area beekeepers on what it takes to raise honeybees in this area of Texas, some of the challenges they face, and what they’ve found to be good solutions. In addition to bees we will take a portion of the afternoon to talk trees! In Texas and especially in our part of Texas trees are a valuable commodity that landowners care about and strive to keep them healthy and vigorous. Come learn about tree biology, how to recognize common tree problems, and how to manage for tree health. We will “leaf” no question unanswered, discussing planting, pruning, watering, fertilizer, insect and disease control.  Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity! Two CEUs (1 General, 1 IPM) will be offered for all licensed pesticide applicators.
