A Letter from the Director...
"It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade." Can you guess what famous author wrote this line? If you guessed Charles Dickens (Great Expectations) you are correct! March is one of the months where the weather is unpredictable and there is a growing sense of anxiousness for spring to arrive. Here at the library we are working hard to provide opportunities for learning as we wait for spring.
Recently the library staff hosted a Teen Takeover. We opened the doors to more than 40 teenagers who came to the library to play board games, talk with a local author, play Xbox and Dungeons and Dragons, and perform on our open mic. It was an amazing evening. We look forward to hosting this event again in the near future. In addition, this month, the library partnered with Nazareth Girl Scout Council, who hosted a Dr. Seuss craft night in celebration of the famous author's birthday. Over twenty children came to the library with their families to hear stories and ignite their creativity! And if you haven't been here lately, stop by with the kids for interactive play on the new Lego Wall in the children's department which was funded by the 2o19 Will R. Beitel Children's Community Foundation.
The Library Staff continues to be super proud of our 2019 Gold Star achievement, awarded by the Pennsylvania Library Association. We continue to foster the guiding principles of this award by offering services and learning opportunities in the areas of health literacy facilitated by St. Luke's, technology literacy lead by the library's technology coordinator, and civil and social responsibilities hosted by AARP as they assist residents prepare their income taxes.
Every day is a new adventure at the Memorial Library of Nazareth. The staff is working hard to serve the residents of the surrounding municipalities. There is always a new book on its way to our shelves, a program that will inspire you, or an opportunity to better your world. Remember the library provides access to all and has a place for everyone.

Thanks to EVERYONE who attended our first-ever Teen Takeover event on Friday, February 28th! More than 40 middle and high school students enjoyed a night filled with food, Xbox games, a writing workshop, more food, open mic, live music, and even more food! We look forward to bringing more events like this to the community!

We would like to collect things for the
Animal Health and Welfare Center!
We are doing this project because we love animals. We are also making dog toys and cat toys for Welcome Home Pet Kits. We hope to get donations from the
Nazareth Memorial Library, Nazareth Intermediate School, Greater Valley YMCA. Our goal is to complete 20 or more hours of community service work to earn the Bronze Award.

Every Thursday by Appointment ~ 5:00-7:00pm
These sessions will be held
in half-hour
blocks where patrons can schedule 1:1 time with Joe McMaster (MLNV Software Coordinator) for assistance with any area of technology. Note: You must have a valid library card to take advantage of this free service.

Tax season is approaching and the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity is happy to announce that certified AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers will be available again this year to provide free tax form assistance to middle and low income taxpayers with special attention to those ages 60 and older. You do not have to be a senior citizen or an AARP member.
NO RESERVATIONS WILL BE TAKEN prior to the day of service. It is a walk-in first-come first-served basis. The Library opens at 9am on Saturdays.
This free service will be available on the following dates from 9:30am-1:30pm

Brainy Bibliophiles is led by Jill Silvius, Ph.D. and takes a more scholarly approach to book discussions.
The next book club will meet Tuesday, June 2nd at 6:30pm to discuss,
Flaubert's Parrot
by Julian Barnes. Although books will no longer be distributed, we ask that you register for this book club. Registration is open at the main circulation desk.
Nazareth Book Club will meet Wednesday, March 11th to discuss Hillbilly Elegy, by J. D. Vance.
Daytime Book Club will meet Friday, March 27th to discuss The Testaments by Margaret Atwood.

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is an open-forum where teens discuss the issues related specifically to teen use of the library (materials and events).
The MLNV's Teen Advisory Board is back for the Winter and Spring! This session we will be focusing on hosting a Teen Night at the library, planning an escape room, and finishing the Teen Room Renovation.
Although this session started in February, there is still time to join! Meetings will take place Wednesdays (3/18, 4/1, 4/15) from 6-7:30pm, and Friday (4/24) from 3-4:30pm.
Perks of joining the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity's TAB: snacks at meetings, receiving volunteer hours, and the ability to make creative and financial choices involving teen programming & the YA/Teen room.
Requirements to join: Entering 7th to 12th grade, have an MLNV library card, be willing to participate in TAB discussions and voice your opinions, and be willing to respect the opinions, tastes, privacy, & choices of others.

Are You Dealing with Moles or Voles?
These pests are quite similar in name but certainly not much more than that. Identifying which one you're dealing with is key to a successful plan of attack.
- Moles are carnivores (so to speak) that feed mainly on grubs and earthworms. Voles are "vegetarian" and eat plant based materials such as bulbs, roots, seeds, and bark. Trapping both of these creatures can be difficult. Moles require baits that simulate earthworms but even then can be tricky. Baits must be strategically placed in the tunnel. Vole baits can be grain based (whereas moles will NOT eat grain based baits) and should be placed near active areas in a secure bait station.
- Moles and voles differ in appearance. Moles have a pointed snout, have large front paws, no "visible" eyes and ears, and live underground in tunnels. Voles have rounded ears, reddish brown or black fur with a gray underside, and live in low-lying vegetation and make trails through the yard "at the surface" whereas the mole may leave tunnels which push up the soil at the surface significantly. Voles will also tunnel in your mulch.
- Voles breed rapidly and will have large populations in small areas. In contrast, the mole will be fairly isolated to one or two on a given property. Traps can be purchased and are known to be effective on both moles and voles but strategically placing these traps will impact the success. Voles can be caught using a standard mouse trap.
While prevention of these two is difficult, they can be managed if an understanding of which one is present and proper control methods are executed.
Joshua Tree is now offering Pest Control in 2020 with a comprehensive quarterly plan including both indoor and outdoor services including mole and vole management as part of the basic plan.
