Augusta Parks & Recreation is hosting a Corn Hole Tournament on September 14th at 1pm on Front Street in Augusta behind Cushnoc Brewing Co.’s Tasting Room. The tournament is $20 per team of two, which includes a beer ticket complimentary of Cushnoc. Registration is required and will close on Friday, September 13th at 5pm.
Bar Harbor Bank & Trust thanks all who participated in its first annual School Supply Drive held from July 22 through August 16, 2019. A total of more than 3,500 items were collected at branch locations across Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont which included notebooks, folders, glue sticks, pencils, and more. All donations support students and educators in the communities the bank services.
MaineGeneral Medical Center continues to invest in state-of-the-art equipment to expand access to minimally invasive surgeries in the Kennebec Valley. The medical center upgraded its surgical robot in Augusta to a model that advances robotic surgery techniques. MaineGeneral has also installed a surgical robot at the Thayer Center for Health in Waterville, where only day (outpatient) surgeries are performed. MaineGeneral is currently the only medical center in the state that uses the surgical robot for emergency procedures, meaning the robot and medical staff trained in robotic surgery are available 24/7. The new surgical robot enhances access throughout the abdomen and chest, and is primarily used for surgeries in the areas of bariatric, colorectal, gynecology, urology, thoracic and general surgery.
GHM Insurance announced that Martha Wentwork was selected by Safeco Insurance for an Award of Excellence. . Fewer than 5% of insurance agents across the country who sell Safeco Insurance personal lines policies receive this prestigious honor. To receive a Safeco Award of Excellence, an insurance agent must have a strong relationship with Safeco and superior underwriting skills. GHM Insurance also announced that Melissa Davenport, Account Executive, has received the designation of Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) following her successful completion of rigorous insurance education program sponsored by the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors.
The Harlow presents an anthology of work from artists who have graduated from the art program at University of Maine at Augusta (UMA.) The UMA Alumni Show is on view from September 13-October 19, 2019 at 100 Water Street in Hallowell and showcases a dynamic range of work. Maine State Museum hosts Maine’s largest natural science education fair for the 17th year on Tuesday, September 10 from 9:00AM to 3:00PM. Explore the many fascinating ways that bugs affect our lives; bugs as pets, pests, art, and pollinators! Join the buzzing at the Museum and get up close to some of the world’s most amazing insects! Check out fossils of bugs from the Ice Age, interact with live aquatic organisms, observe the art of fly tying, or hold a tarantula in the palm of your hand! Exhibitors provide hands-on displays, fascinating discoveries, and fun for visitors of all ages! Free admission all day.
The Kennebec Performing Arts Company (KPAC) is starting rehearsals for the 2019-2020 performing season. KPAC invites singers and instrumentalists high school age and older to join them. New members can be accepted through the last rehearsals in September. The chorus rehearsals are Mondays at 6:30 at Hope Baptist Church in Manchester. The Jazz Band rehearsals are Tuesdays at 5:45 at Cony High School. The Wind Ensemble rehearsals are Tuesdays at 7:00 at Cony High School. The United Way of Kennebec Valley (UWKV) Board of Directors has named Courtney Yeager as the organization's executive director. Yeager took the helm on August 10 following the retirement of longtime executive director Rob Gordon. Yeager has served as UWKV's director of resource development and marketing since 2016. In that role, she became responsible for the annual fundraising campaign, increasing the campaign by 19 percent in three years. As a result, UWKV has had the capacity to partner with six additional nonprofit agencies, bringing the total number of funded programs to 51. More than 30 percent of the population is now directly impacted by a UWKV-funded program.
United Way of Kennebec Valley raised a record-breaking $16,000 to support community programming at its 49th Annual Golf Scramble. Twenty-seven teams competed and 37 businesses sponsored the tournament, held August 12 at the Augusta Country Club. Proceeds from the event will support United Way's annual fundraising campaign, which aims to raise $1.8 million to fund 51 programs in the Kennebec Valley region.
