May 19th, 2015 2:00pm to 3:00pm Risk Management Basics [Free Webinar]
Presented by the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance Group The Nonprofits Insurance Alliance is NYCON Corporate Partner, providing risk management and insurance solutions to many of our members
Risk is anything that can derail your nonprofit from accomplishing its mission. Risk management is a discipline for identifying risk, assessing how serious or severe the risks are, and determining ways to avoid or minimize harm and financial losses. Risk management is not some mystery. Enlightened risk taking requires awareness of the potential downsides or a new approach or program, thoughtful planning for positive outcomes, and simultaneously ensuring that there is as soft a landing as possible when a venture doesn't work out as planned. Our Director of Loss Control will provide some simple frameworks for organizing and implementing basic risk management practices in a nonprofit organization; share the most common risks facing nonprofits based on 20+ years of claims history; look at some specific areas of risk and what you can and should be doing to minimize your exposure.

May 21st, 2015 1:00pm to 2:00pm Understanding Important New Changes Proposed by FASB [BBB Webinar]
Presented by Julie L. Floch, CPA and Candice Meth, CPA
EisnerAmper LLP This webinar is presented for the benefit of nonprofit leaders by the BBB Wise Giving Alliance
and the Education and Research Foundation of the Better Business Bureau of
Metropolitan New York on behalf of the Better Business Bureau system
On April 22, 2015, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) issued an exposure draft of proposed changes to the not-for-profit financial statement model. This is the model that nonprofits follow when presenting their annual audited financial statements at year-end. FASB has announced that it will accept comments about the exposure draft of proposed changes until August 20, 2015. The proposed changes are substantial and may have a significant impact. In this webinar, we will discuss the basic features of this guidance, as well as how the proposed changes are likely to affect the not-for-profit sector. We will walk through the principles of the exposure draft and highlight the changes from existing GAAP financial reporting. Who Should Attend? Nonprofit leaders, including CEO's, Executive Directors, COO's, CFO's, Board Members, Development Officers, Program Officers and any others who must report and communicate about nonprofit financial statements will need to understand these proposed changes, so you will be able to consider the potential effects for your organization and offer comments directly to FASB should you so choose.

We are a nonprofit hospital chartered under the nonprofit law as a corporation with religious purposes.
Do the audit requirements (and conflict/whistle blower requirements) apply to us? Our revenue does exceed $1 million.
A: Michael West, Esq., NYCON's Senior Legal Advisor Responds: If your organization is exempt from NYS filing requirements under Section 172-A of the Executive Law because it's a Religious Corporation, or otherwise has faith-based purposes, it is also exempt from auditing requirements imposed by the Nonprofit Revitalization Act. Otherwise, with limited exceptions (basically, those applicable to notice requirements under Section 605 of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law), all other NPRA requirements are equally applicable to both Not-for-Profit and Religious Corporations, including those relative to conflicts of interest and whistle blower protection.
