Presented by the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance Group
The Nonprofits Insurance Alliance is NYCON Corporate Partner, providing risk management and insurance solutions to many of our members

Manage Your Nonprofit's Risk!
Risk is anything that can derail your nonprofit from accomplishing its mission. Risk management is a discipline for identifying risk, assessing how serious or severe the risks are, and determining ways to avoid or minimize harm and financial losses. Risk management is not some mystery. Enlightened risk taking requires awareness of the potential downsides or a new approach or program, thoughtful planning for positive outcomes, and simultaneously ensuring that there is as soft a landing as possible when a venture doesn't work out as planned. Our Director of Loss Control will provide some simple frameworks for organizing and implementing basic risk management practices in a nonprofit organization; share the most common risks facing nonprofits based on 20+ years of claims history; look at some specific areas of risk and what you can and should be doing to minimize your exposure.  This session is FREE to NYCON Members, please use this discount code to register: NYCNP2015

Understanding Important New Changes Proposed by FASB [BBB Webinar]

Presented by Julie L. Floch, CPA and Candice Meth, CPA
EisnerAmper LLP This webinar is presented for the benefit of nonprofit leaders by the BBB Wise Giving Alliance   and the Education and Research Foundation of the Better Business Bureau of  Metropolitan New York on behalf of the Better Business Bureau system

Better Business Bureau LogoOn April 22, 2015, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) issued an exposure draft of proposed changes to the not-for-profit financial statement model. This is the model that nonprofits follow when presenting their annual audited financial statements at year-end. FASB has announced that it will accept comments about the exposure draft of proposed changes until August 20, 2015. The proposed changes are substantial and may have a significant impact. In this webinar, we will discuss the basic features of this guidance, as well as how the proposed changes are likely to affect the not-for-profit sector. We will walk through the principles of the exposure draft and highlight the changes from existing GAAP financial reporting. Who Should Attend? Nonprofit leaders, including CEO's, Executive Directors, COO's, CFO's, Board Members, Development Officers, Program Officers and any others who must report and communicate about nonprofit financial statements will need to understand these proposed changes, so you will be able to consider the potential effects for your organization and offer comments directly to FASB should you so choose.

How to be an Engaging Nonprofit (Parts 1 & 2)
The Role of Authentic Communication, Conversation and Caring in Fundraising
[Binghamton]

Presented by Valerie Venezia, VP of Membership & Marketing and Andrew Marietta, Manager, Central New York Office; NYCON

Free Registration

blurred-business-shake.jpg We've heard about the importance of messaging and marketing and their role in fund development for nonprofits.  We know that, in order to reach people who might care about our cause and give something (time, talent and treasure), we have to "sell" what we do to the right audience. For many nonprofit staff and board members, this nomenclature doesn't quite fit with what we do on a daily basis - nor is it something we've been trained for. Luckily for us, marketing and sales "talk" has recently given way to a relationship based "authentic engagement" and content marketing movement. Basically, believing that being a good friend will yield great returns for your mission. Engagment entails the age-old tenets of being true to who you are, being honest with people, being kind and generous, being open to having valuable conversations even if someone isn't agreeing with you and, sometimes, asking for help - or just a friend to lean on. Though the principles of "engagement" may feel more promising for fundraising and perhaps like a better "fit" for nonprofits, they certainly come with their own challenges. Part 1 will focus on: Being true to who you are (as an organization) and Being honest with those that care about you. Part 2 will focus on: Being kind and generous, Creating a safe place for valuable conversation, Asking for help or feedback, and Continuing the Engagement cycle.

For committees of the Board, what authority do they really have and how to we ensure they are accountable to the board. Join this discussion and bring your questions and suggestions.

Health Insurance 2016: Definition of Group Size to Change

Under New York law and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), the definition of "small group" will be
1-100 employees as of January 1, 2016. FAQs

"This is good news for the nonprofit community," says Peter Andrew, CS Plus CEO.

Why? New York will now use the same Elligible Employee count the Affordable Care Act uses. If that number is under 100, then it's now a small group.

According to Mr. Andrew:
"In the past groups of over 50 were rated, and offered plans, based on their census, which tends to be highly female populated in the nonprofit community
. This caused higher rates to be charged (or some carriers would simply decline to offer a quote) since females tend to use more medical services than males (the formal term is higher morbidity rates). It is my estimation that many nonprofits between 50 and 100 staff will see a rate reduction and a greater choice of carriers. I'm sure nonprofits will put those extra dollars to great use.

At this point, this is all we know. I suspect we'll start to see what plans and rates will be available sometime after July 1."
