Ever find yourself in a negative state of mind?...telling yourself, "I have no self-control; I've gone on so many diets and failed; Why try? I just can't do it!"

Try this: Next time the worst-case scenario enters the chat in your head, call it out.

Next time you find yourself thinking, “I can’t do this–I’m going to fail,” pull a 180˚ with your thoughts, and play out the alternative:

If I make it and succeed, what’s the best that could happen? What does success look like? Where does it take me? How will I feel?

Three fast facts

1. Our brains are wired to protect us. This can make us jump to the worst possible conclusion without much evidence to back it up.

2. As a result, we may doubt our ability to be successful, decreasing the chance that we’ll even try.

3. Shifting our focus to the best-case scenario can increase our confidence, allowing us to identify behaviors that help us be successful. Not "positive thinking"–resetting your mindset.

Dear WW Philadelphia Member,

Years ago, in a Workshop where I was the Coach, a Lifetime Member asked me to talk her Mother into joining Weight Watchers. She explained her Mom was morbidly obese and had mobility and health issues due to her weight. She said she grocery shopped for her Mom but kind neighbors would still show up with sweets and other foods her Mom found hard to resist.

I explained to the Member, I couldn’t talk her Mom into joining. No one can really talk anyone into coming to Weight Watchers. Everyone must come on their own. I invited the Member to bring her Mom as a guest the following week. I recommended they sit in the back. If Mom needed to make "a break for it," it was okay but if she wanted to join, she could do so after the Workshop and I would give her the full orientation for new Members.

The next week the Member and her Mom arrived just before the Workshop began and sat in the back as I had suggested. Mom was using a wheelchair but was able to stand and walk for short periods.

At the end of the meeting, the Member and Mom were waving to me indicating Mom wanted to get started. After they and others joined, I invited any new Members or anyone with questions to the front of the room for orientation.

The next week, "Mom" showed up, came to me to get weighed instood from her wheelchair, and stepped on the scale. At the same time, she leaned forward and whispered to me, “I didn’t do very well this week. I cheated.” I said, “Do you want to talk about it?” She said, “I ate an extra tablespoon of raisins.” That woman was describing eating extra raisins as if she had satisfied a Big Mac attack!

I looked at her reassuringly and said, “Everything is going to be okay.” Then she saw her new weight which showed she had lost 13 pounds that week. I’ll never forget her smile or her sense of relief.

She continued with WW and some months later, she had lost enough weight to be comfortable traveling to visit her only sibling, a sibling who she never thought she would see again in this lifetime because she was so unhealthy.

Taking charge of our health is life-changing. Changing our stories from one of failure and dread to one of possibilities is AMAZING. In 8-12 weeks, you can lose 10% or more of your starting weight.

The story in our head stops us from starting because our head sees the possible failure and wants to protect us from that feeling of failure. This story needs to be rewritten.

Weight Watchers is HERE and we’re looking forward to serving you in our workshops.

Take charge my friends, succeed on purpose.

Fondest regards,

Deb Wright

6 steps to a better mindset as you lose weight and get healthy. Instead of "I can't, Yes I can!"

1/ Practice self-compassion: Losing weight and getting healthy can be challenging, so it's essential to be kind to yourself throughout the process. Instead of beating yourself up over setbacks or mistakes, practice self-compassion and treat yourself with understanding and forgiveness. Remember that change takes time and effort. But it's all worthwhile.

2/ Focus on progress, not perfection: Shift your mindset from aiming for perfection to valuing progress. Celebrate each small victory, whether it's making healthier food choices, completing a workout, or staying consistent with your habits. Recognize that every step forward, no matter how small, is an achievement worth acknowledging.

3/ Embrace a growth mindset: Adopt a growth mindset, which is the belief that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and effort. Understand that weight loss and getting healthy are journeys that involve learning, adapting, and evolving. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth rather than as obstacles.

4/ Maintaining a healthy mindset is crucial for long-term success. By focusing on positive language and cultivating a growth-oriented perspective, you can create a healthy mindset that supports your weight loss and overall well-being journey. Take a walk, ride your bike, play outside and bring in the sun.

5/ Surround yourself with positive support: Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, family, or your WW group which is always there to encourage your progress and share similar goals. Engage with individuals who have a positive mindset and can provide motivation, accountability, and helpful advice.

6/ Practice positive self-talk: Pay attention to your inner dialogue and replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations. Instead of saying "I can't do this," remind yourself of your capabilities by saying "I am capable and determined to reach my goals." Reframe negative thoughts into positive ones will significantly impact your mindset.
