The Walsh Summer Work Experience Program (WSWEP) is funded by MSCF Tim and Mary Walsh Charitable Fund at the Main Street Community Foundation, Farmington Bank Community Foundation, the City of Bristol Community Development Block Grant, and the Wally Barnes Fund for Community Leadership Initiatives at the Main Street Community Foundation.
Twenty-five students from Bristol Central, Bristol Eastern, and E.C. Goodwin High Schools were selected to participate in this program run through the United Way of West Central Connecticut. Students were selected through an interview process and over eight weeks will gain work-readiness skills from professionals in the Bristol area.
The program started with an introductory week of goal setting, workplace etiquette, participating in an employer panel, and learning about different career paths available to working-age individuals. The following weeks, WSWEP students will work at the work sites best suited for their goals and will have weekly Friday check-ins to share their experiences and continue to learn from guest speakers.
Some of the work sites this year are Bristol Hospital, ShopRite, Oma's Pride, Bakery on Maple, United Way, Family Roots, City Hall, Bristol Bazaar, Primo Press, and Rolling Videogames. We are grateful to all those who make this program possible for our students.
