School is out and summer is approaching! We've had an exciting spring and we're excited to share it with you in another installment of United News! Take a look below to see what United Way of Lancaster County has been up to in May and to see what is scheduled for summer 2024!

Continuing to Improve Our Services

Our 211 Director, Patricia Espinosa-Vargas and Database Manager, Trish Houser spent the week at InformUSA’s Grand Gathering in Grand Rapids, Michigan with their Information and Referral colleagues across the nation. They each sat through sessions on how to improve processes for the Contact Center and learn about new innovations in this field of work. Both are ready to hit the ground running and begin implementing tips and tools they learned at the conference!

The 25th Annual Trike Race

On your mark, get set, go! On May 7th, 34 teams competed for the first-place trophy – and the glory – in our 2024 Trike Race, held in the Clipper Magazine Stadium parking lot. Emcee, T.J. Springer of WGAL, kept the crowd informed and engaged throughout the race while also cheering on the WGAL team!

With a 2 year winning streak, Orrstown Bank worked hard to defend their title, but it was the Rhoads Energy team that pushed through and took the first-place spot! All members of the competing teams were provided tickets to celebrate the event at the Stormers vs. York Revolution game immediately following and Rhoads Energy had the honor of throwing the first pitch.

This year’s racers weren’t the only ones breaking records! This 25 year event broke the record in number of teams competing and dollars raised. Through our generous sponsors and registration fees, $20,000 was raised to support the vital services provided to our community through our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and 211 programs.

Thank you to our sponsors Union Community Care, UPMC, WGAL, and Northwest Bank.

The Results Are In!

VITA is celebrating another successful year. This year, 180 volunteers helped complete 10,306 income tax returns for FREE! We saved our community $2,813,538 in tax preparation fees and were able to bring $9,829,249 into the community in the form of refunds. Of those individuals receiving a refund, the average amount was $1,594. We would like to thank our volunteers who gave of their time – almost 13,300 hours! Your passion and dedication make a real difference in Lancaster County.

Newly Released ALICE Data

United Way of Pennsylvania released an updated ALICE (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed) report this month. It shows an increase in households at or below the ALICE income threshold. In Lancaster County, 36% of households are forced to make tough choices, such as deciding between quality childcare or paying the rent — choices that have long-term consequences not only for their families, but for all. See more on the report below:
