Understanding and Treating Motor Speech Related Disorders

Workshop Description

Speech disorders are one of the most common pathologies treated by speech and language clinicians. In recent years, there has been an increase in the awareness and subsequent diagnosis of motor speech disorder in children; particularly Childhood Apraxia of Speech. As a clinician, it can be challenging to make a differential diagnosis and know how to move forward in treatment. Difficulty in these matters can often be compounded by the challenge of counseling frustrated parents who observe their child unable to clearly articulate words which they know.

This training will provide you with the knowledge you need to better understand what is happening to a child with motor speech disorders. By comprehending the deficits, you will be able to know what to look for, how to structure the session and to make sure you select appropriate targets so that the child gets the type of intervention needed to make gains towards intelligible speech.
