Parshat Shoftim

One of the key paradoxes of the Torah life is that living a life of Torah observance challenges us to conform to a robust set of practices, while learning Torah challenges us to be creative, find our own voices, and to express innovative interpretations.

The Torah communicates this paradox in the description in Parshat Shoftim of the relationship we should have with our leaders when we have questions.

On the one hand, the Torah commands, “do not deviate from what they instruct you right or left.” Rashi quotes the Midrash, “you must even listen to them when they tell you that right is left, or left is right.” Even when you know that they are telling you to do the wrong thing, you must comply. This is a high degree of conformity and deferring to authority.

On the other hand, the Torah commands, “you shall come to the judge who is in your days.” Rashi quotes the Gemara which interprets, you must go to the judge who is available to you in your time, even if they are not as knowledgeable or on the same level as past authorities. This gives a high level of freedom of thought to people in each generation. Judges do not need to restrict themselves to following the thoughts of their predecessors. Judges are tasked to make their own decisions and develop their own ideas without looking over their shoulder.

This dynamic of conformity and creativity is the heart of our Jewish experience. In school, we have the privilege of helping to enculturate our children and young women and men to this enlivening dynamic. We pray and sing together in the same words used by our ancestors. We learn and practice halachot in the same ways as the generations before us. And we open our minds to new ideas, ask probing questions, experiment with innovative thinking, and bring our fresh lens to the Torah we learn and the world we encounter.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Noam Stein

News from Kohelet Yeshiva

Mazal Tov to the over 50 KYLS/KYMS students who successfully completed the Summer Tehillim Challenge and received beautiful Koren Tehillim!

The students read a perek of Tehillim each day of the summer using our special Tehillim packet, which included a space for them to fill in who they were saying Tehillim for (i.e., in memory of ____, for a Refuah Shleimah for ____, in thanks to Hashem for ____). It was a wonderful way for our students to help ensure that their Torah, Tefillah, and Mitzvot continue far beyond our Kohelet school building.

But the story is not yet over. We were in for a pleasant surprise. Many students who were unable to participate over the summer asked if they could have another opportunity to earn the Tehillim. As a result, we are going to have a Tehillim Challenge 2.0 - any student who reads from the new Tehillim packet each night, starting with the first day of school and continuing through Simchat Torah, will also receive the beautiful Tehillim the first day back from Sukkot vacation.

Then, we were then in for an even greater surprise. Many of the students who earned the new Tehillim wanted to continue saying Tehillim. So, we decided that any student who already earned their Tehillim can participate in a quest to complete the entire Sefer Tehillim by year’s end by reading one page per night throughout the year. Any student who accomplishes that feat will receive a beautiful Koren siddur.

We are so proud of our students!

KYHS students, faculty, and administrators had a blast at our Welcome Back Students BBQ!
