Welcome to the first edition of the Top Ten Campus Community Updates newsletter: a digital publication that highlights top stories, initiatives, and updates on behalf of the University of Windsor's Executive Leadership Team. This newsletter is expected to be shared with the campus community quarterly to help keep you up to date with the latest decisions from the Board of Governors, Senate, University administration and beyond that may be of interest to you. Approval of the Aspire Strategic Plan

Earlier this spring, the University of Windsor's Board of Governors and Senate approved the institution's next strategic plan, Aspire: Together for Tomorrow. Data strategy information gathering and preliminary planning is already underway. Next, the strategic planning team will host a thank you reception for contributors and a public launch event that will take place later this month. Stay tuned for details!

Alumni & Student Pow Wow

The second annual Alumni & Student Pow Wow will take place at the Toldo Lancer Centre from May 11 to 13. Funded in part by the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits plan, the three-day event will include drumming, dancing, crafts, traditional food, and a special guest performance.

Spring Convocation at the Toldo Lancer Centre

Spring Convocation will take place over 11 sessions at the Toldo Lancer Centre from May 30 to June 2. Join us as we celebrate the 5,000 University of Windsor graduates who will cross the stage and 4 honorary degree recipients. Support your faculty and its students by volunteering at Convocation or becoming a member of the platform party.

Indigenous Research and Scholarship Forum

On May 9, 2023, the Office of the Senior Advisor to the President on Indigenous Relations and Outreach and the Vice-President, Research and Innovation will co-host the first University of Windsor Indigenous Research and Scholarship Forum. This full-day, hybrid conference aims to educate our campus community on Indigenous research, scholarship, and methodologies.

Hire UWindsor Campaign

The new Hire UWindsor campaign will help connect employers with the knowledge, expertise, and professional commitment of the University’s graduates. The University of Windsor Alumni Association, Co-operative Education and Workplace Partnerships, and Career Development and Experiential Learning are recruiting organizations to register as Hire UWindsor partners.

Pronoun Project

A new campus resource to aid in normalizing and respecting the use of pronouns differing from the binary of she/her and he/him is an inclusive step in the right direction in affirming diverse gender identity on campus. Work on this project started two years ago to produce a comprehensive guide to understanding pronouns as a reference for instructors, students, staff, and visitors to campus.

Sustainability Initiatives at UWindsor

The University of Windsor has implemented a range of initiatives that prioritize environmental responsibility and social equity, taking bold steps to pave the way for a more sustainable future. Expected to be completed by the end of 2023, the Campus Carbon Neutral Master Plan strives to transform the University into a carbon-neutral campus by 2050, with a 45 per cent reduction by 2030.

University Registrar Appointment

Ray Darling will begin an appointment as University Registrar on May 15.

Currently an associate consultant for the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, he has held the role of registrar at three previous universities, Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier and most recently, the University of Guelph.

2023-24 Operating Budget

In April, the Board of Governors approved UWindsor's 2023-24 Operating Budget. The budget includes salary and benefit improvements consistent with all staff collective agreements ratified in 2022. The budget continues to include a number of strategic reserve funds to ensure the institution is ready for the unexpected – be it a change in enrolment patterns, or unexpected costs – as well as investments in our financial future.

Blue Ribbon Panel

The Ontario government is creating a blue-ribbon panel of experts to provide advice and recommendations for keeping the postsecondary education sector financially stable and focused on providing the best student experience possible. For the 2023-24 academic year, the province is continuing a general freeze on tuition fees for all domestic students, while providing colleges and universities the flexibility to increase tuition fees for domestic, out-of-province students by up to five per cent.
