Featuring Dr. Chip Foley

With the advent of summer, we congratulated and said farewell to departing fellows and residents, and welcomed the new arrivals. The Department of Surgery now has four residency and ten fellowship training programs, with 80+ trainees. Our department has seen tremendous growth in the past decade, along with the addition of new requirements for student, resident and fellow education. A new position of Vice Chair of Education was created to improve the educational experiences across all programs, establish new collaborations, and share resources and expertise to the fullest extent possible.

In my new role as Vice Chair, my main goal will be to integrate the educational efforts of all of our divisions to ensure coordination of our departmental educational activities and the efficient use of our resources. My first duty will be to meet with representatives from each division and program to better understand their goals and needs. We hope to break down the traditional silos between UME, GME, and CME to improve learner transition from one segment of their medical education to the next. We'll also be looking at faculty development-how can we help faculty become better teachers? Additionally, Dr. Girma Tefera, our Vice Chair for Global Surgery, will be able to help us expand our Global Health partnerships, and the potential educational opportunities those partnerships will afford our trainees and faculty.

This new structure will make it easier for everyone to access the unique resources in the department to further their educational missions. As I take on this new position, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Jacob Greenberg will take the helm as General Surgery Residency Program Director.

Dr. Carla Pugh, MD, PhD, FACS, was recently trending across Twitter and Facebook. Following Dr. Susan Pitt's media sensation #ILookLikeASurgeon, Dr. Pugh was trending from a photo among fellow surgeons in the OR and out, proving surgeons exist in both realms.

Matthew Koopmann, MD
General Surgery Resident, Class of 2012
Assistant Professor of Surgery,  Oregon Health Sciences University
Vascular Surgeon, Portland VA Medical Center
General Surgeon, Major, United States Army Reserves Medical Corps

Reflecting on your time here at the UW Dept of Surgery, what do you believe helped you prepare for your surgical career?
I think the autonomy we were given as residents prepared me for independent practice. We were encouraged to be independent thinkers, operate with graduated autonomy, and teach other residents. I especially valued my experience at the Middleton VA, which inspired me to be a full-time surgeon. I felt very prepared coming out of residency.

How do you instill values and lessons learned during your UW experience to a new generation of surgical trainees?
I really like to challenge the residents to be thoughtful about what they are doing. Also, if you proved that you were ready to work independently, you were given supervised autonomy. I like to let residents operate with residents once they prove they can do a case with me. It's something we were allowed to do at UW and it made me a better teacher and surgeon.

Share a fond memory.
One funny story: One day, when I was in the lab, I was meeting with residency applicants who were waiting to be interviewed. Ken Kudsk (a mentor of mine) peeks his head in the door, scans the room, and finds me in the very back where the food is. All the residents and applicants get very quiet. He points a finger and says "Come to my office" and then disappears. I make my way out of the room with everyone staring at my. I am wondering what I could have possibly done as a lab resident to get in trouble with Dr. K. I get to his office and he hands me a dress shirt and says "try it on". I take off the shirt I am wearing, try the shirt on and it fits. That evening, Dr. Kudsk drops off two giant garbage bags full of dress shirts at my apartment. They didn't fit him anymore, but they fit me just fine and I still wear some of them to this day!

What else are you up to?
I am a general surgeon in the Army Reserves, I commissioned during my 4th year of residency. I have deployed once to Afghanistan and will deploy again this summer. I have have a wife (Liz), a daughter (Diane, 13), a son (Leslie, 10) and a dog. We enjoy hiking. I was a bike commuter during residency so we only had one car. I have gone back to my UW roots and got rid of my car and now
commute by bike to my current job in Portland.

Meet a Resident: Anne-Lise D'Angelo and Mike Nabozny

The General Surgery Residency Training Program is excited to announce the Administrative Chief Residents for the 2017-18 academic year. These individuals were selected by both peers and faculty to lead the general surgery residents.

Anne-Lise D'Angelo, originally from Menlo Park, CA, attended Princeton University where she played varsity water polo for four years and graduated with honors in Psychology and Neuroscience (AB, 2006). Anne-Lise went on to obtain her MD from the University of Michigan in 2011. During her general surgery residency, she spent time in the lab of Dr. Carla Pugh, investigating the use of new technology to assess surgical performance. At the same time, Dr. D'Angelo also completed a master's degree in the Department of Educational Psychology. She plans to complete a colorectal fellowship after finishing her general surgery training. Besides her interest in surgical education and clinical schedules, Anne-Lise enjoys swimming and crossfit.

Michael Nabozny grew up in Kinderhook, NY. Michael attended the University of Maryland where he played rugby. After graduating in 2004 with a BS in chemistry, Michael spent two years in the Peace Corps in northern Namibia teaching  mathematics and science to junior and senior high school students. He then returned to upstate New York and attended the University of Rochester School of Medicine graduating in 2011. During residency, he spent two years working Dr. Margaret "Gretchen" Schwarze from the Division of Vascular Surgery where their research included improving decision making and communication regarding high-risk surgery. He also completed a Surgical Ethics Fellowship at the University of Chicago during his research years. Mike plans to complete a fellowship in trauma/critical care after finishing his general surgery training. He currently lives with his wife, Anna and 3 year old son Peter in Madison.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. D'Angelo and Dr. Nabozny on this and all of their accomplishments thus far.
