Worship This Sunday
October 22, 2017, 9:30 and 11:00 am

"We Don't Just Stand, We Move"

Rev. Richard Hood

From the outside, many view our religious faith with suspicion. Skeptics accuse us of being the church where "you can believe anything." The skeptics are wrong. Come Sunday and find out why.

Rev. Richard Hood was born and raised in Waltham, Massachusetts.  He is a life long UU.  He graduated from Tufts University and Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, NY.    While in Rochester he met his wife Molly.  Rev. Hood was the administrator and part owner of an assisted living facility in Rochester as well as a part time minister of the Pullman Memorial Universalist Church in Albion, NY.  He retired from Pullman Memorial after 35 years of service and was named Minister Emeritus.   Dick and Molly have 2 sons and 3 grandchildren.  Ten years ago they moved from Rochester to Sun City Hilton Head. From June to October they live in Maine.  They are active members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah.

Also this Sunday:
  • 12:30 - 1:30 pm: Robert Pawlicki book signing
  • 7:30 - 8:30 pm: True Colors AA Meeting, Phillippa's Place

Member Book Signing
This Sunday!, October 22, 12:30 pm, Sanctuary

Perhaps you've heard Robert Pawlicki speak at Church or on WRUU, read his newspaper articles or his first book.  If so you know Robert draws on the science of positive psychology, the practiced, common sense of a good therapist, plus some contagious optimism and good humor to deliver sound advice on how to increase our happiness.

Robert's latest work, of which he is most proud, is the book  Control What You Can Control: A Path to Happiness.

UU Book Club
October 24, 6:00 - 7:30 pm, Rahn Hall
Second and Fourth Tuesdays of every month.

The UU Book Club  will read both fiction and non-fiction, confronting topics like race, religious pluralism, social justice, violence, native peoples, American exceptionalism, health, gender, and the environment.

The book for October is "The Painted Drum" by Louis Erdrich.  Compelling and unforgettable, bestselling author Louise Erdrich's Painted Drum explores the often fraught relationship between mothers and daughters, the strength of family, and the intricate rhythms of grief with all the grace, wit, and startling beauty that characterizes this acclaimed author's finest work.

If you would like to join us in our readings, but can not attend book club meetings, please sign up for a weekly email. Emails can include short videos, music, articles and links that expand upon the text. You can sign up and drop out of emails anytime.  Many of our future books  will be available for sale at the UU Bookstore in Rahn Hall. For all things Book Club related, please email Kelsey Buckner at  kelseykate@gmail.com

In December the UU book group has chosen to read: Centering: Navigating Race, Power and Authenticity in Ministry .  If you would like to order your copy from our Church bookstore, please let Caroline Hopkinson know, either e-mail her at  Carohopkinson@gmail.com  or stop by the bookstore and sign up for the group purchase (profits from sales benefit the Church's operating fund.)

Fridays 6:00 - 7:30pm, Phillippa's Place (in one of our buildings just behind the church) Together in this group, we will share in the special practice of yoga: move on the mat through simple yoga poses, learn breathing practices, chant ancient Sanskrit mantras, and delve into meditation. As a group we will come together in sangha, or togetherness, to cultivate spiritual awareness.

TED Plus and Popcorn
Friday, October 27, 6:00 pm.
Host: Kevin Ionno

October is Kids, Parents, and Friends Night at TED Plus and Popcorn. This means everyone is invited, even those without kids! We'll be featuring three incredible presentations oriented toward young people.

First, fifteen-year-old Tavi Gevinson had a hard time finding strong female, teenage role models -- so she built a space where they could find each other. At TEDxTeen, she illustrates how the conversations on sites like Rookie, her wildly popular web magazine for and by teen girls, are putting a new, unapologetically uncertain and richly complex face on modern feminism.

Second, tourists come to Kenya for the lions. But lions also attack cattle in towns and villages, at great cost to the locals. When he was 11, Richard Turere developed a device - made from five flashlight bulbs, a car battery and a solar panel - to keep lions away. At TED@Nairobi, he shares his invention.

Third, using three iPhones like magical props, Marco Tempest spins a clever, surprisingly heartfelt meditation on truth and lies, art and emotion.

Please join use for these fascinating talks and discussion whether young or old. Everybody welcome!

Email Kevin Ionno,  jkionno@yahoo.com to confirm your attendance.

Hosted by Orlando Montoya, an award-winning radio producer, and the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Savannah.  Also tune into "Listening to Literature" with Leigh Rich on Friday, October 20th at 12:05pm on community radio WRUU 107.5 FM and WRUU.ORG . WRUU - Spotlight
SUSPIRYA
7:00 - 8:00 pm Sundays
Host: John Paul Park

Suspirya offers an eclectic selection of music focusing on local acts, along with songs from all eras and regions of the world, past and present, with each show following a specific theme, genre, or era.  I nterviews are drawn from local and touring musical acts, artists, advocates, activists, and anyone else who offer interesting stories or perspectives to share. Savannah consistently offers a well of fascinating events and happenings that receive little to no attention in popular media. This show will address these issues in order to spur conversation and action within the local community.

Host John Paul Park is a SCAD graduate student and resident of Savannah for the past three years. He works with Savannah residents who have been affected by travel bans and other recent immigration policies and is connected with various movements within the community, including the DIY scene, LGBT scene, Food Not Bombs, and political and humanitarian activist groups. He's been consistently shocked and disappointed with how these parts of the community don't receive the attention they deserve while more frivolous matters are addressed within our news and general discussion.
