Message from Rev. Bob...

At our Ingathering service on September 8, we will “gather the waters” in a water communion. This Unitarian Universalist ritual uses water as a metaphor for all the intangible blessings running through our lives: joy, dedication, connection, flow.

You are invited, if you wish, to bring a little water from some place special to you. Put it in a container, and bring it to our service on September 8. There will be a time in the service for everyone to mingle their water together. The water's origin can be wherever you like: a cherished destination, or the kitchen tap.

We will have plenty of other water on hand and, as water is

pretty much the same everywhere, you can use it to symbolize whatever water you would like to contribute to the service.

The collected water is then boiled, and this sterilized water is often used in our child dedication services, among other rituals. It helps us remember that the flow of life works through each one of us – and, reminds us that we are all connected in the beloved ecosystem of our shared earth.

As I write this, it’s pouring down and thundering. I don’t dare go out in it long, but maybe I’ll put out a Mason jar…happy rest of summer, everyone.

With gratitude,

Reverend Bob

USH General Interest

Endowment Campaign Begins

Did you know that USH possesses an Endowment Fund? And do you know how this financial asset, which can be loosely characterized as a savings account, enables our Unitarian Society to carry on, with a degree of freedom from financial insecurity?

Our Endowment Committee, chaired by David Newton and comprising Sherry Manetta, Cris Noble, Joe Rubin, and Jim Venneman, has been working through the summer to formulate, in this season of campaigns, an Endowment Campaign to raise awareness of our endowment — what it is, how it helps us, and how we, who benefit from the foresight and careful stewardship of earlier Hartford Unitarians/UUs, can act to reinforce an already solid foundation for those who follow.

This Sunday, Joe Rubin (pictured) offers a short briefing, in 5 minutes or less: an orientation, covering what an endowment is, and why would we want one? Succeeding weeks will see the other committee members expanding on various related aspects.

During late spring and throughout the summer, the USH Endowment Committee has been planning a concentrated campaign to enhance the financial security of our Society's future. The result of these efforts will be rolled out for our congregation over the coming weeks, through a series of brief talks during Sunday services, from members of the Committee. You'll see how you can help us position USH for the successful, thriving continuation of liberal religious tradition in Hartford.

Joe Rubin and his wife, Diane Cadrain, have been active USH members for about 38 years, and have just celebrated 50 years of marriage. Their children grew up at USH. Joe has served as a member of the USH Board, its president, member and chair of the Religious Education Committee, and volunteer or member of many other USH projects.

Joe holds a B.A. from Yale, a J.D. from Harvard, and also attended a graduate program in trial advocacy at Georgetown University Law Center. Joe mostly retired about two years ago from a long legal career, including 36 years leading teams in major litigation and serving as an executive staff member with the Connecticut Attorney General's office. He has also taught Trial Practice at Yale and the University of Connecticut law schools. He continues to do some volunteer legal work focused on helping migrant children, and some consulting work for the State of Connecticut.

Take 10 Minutes –

Advance Well-Being Research

Bryant Moore, friend of USH, is seeking adult participants to take a short online survey (~10 minutes) for his dissertation research. More information is provided within the opening page of the survey, which can be found at this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZQQT6FC

Bryant sends appreciation for the response from those who've participated so far; it's been helpful and gratifying. Responses received by September 15 will be welcome.

First Friday Hangout and Discussion

(formerly First Tuesdays)

Friday, September 6, 10:30 a.m. – noon

Every first Friday of the month, in our library and simultaneously on Zoom, Rev. Bob hosts a time when anyone can drop in to talk about life, the universe, and everything. Everyone is welcome to share, but no one is required to.

Here is the schedule (topics subject to change based on circumstance and whimsy):

September 6: Finding peace in an exhausting world - how to live in the 24-hour news/spin cycle.

October 4: The Flaming Chalice, and other symbols of hope.

November 1: Forgiveness. What does it mean to forgive someone? What does it mean to be forgiven?

December 6: Winter Show and Tell (you are invited to bring an object that has something to do with winter for you –can be holidays, snow, whatever you like).

Newcomers always welcome; stop by whenever you like!
