Two Events featuring Barbra Batshalom
|
|
Tuesday, March 14 & Wednesday, March 15
Barbra Batshalom
is the founder and executive director of the nonprofit Sustainable Performance Institute (SPI) and past founder and president of the USGBC Affiliate in Massachusetts. She is an industry leader whose vision drives the organization's programs to transform the market from public policy to professional practice. SPI's Green Firm Certification is the first industry program to provide a framework for evaluating the capability of design and construction firms to deliver a consistent, high quality sustainability service and was adopted by HUD in 2012. SPI's Green Firm Boot Camp workshop program has been delivered to hundreds of firms nationwide to help raise the bar on professional practice in the industry. With a diverse background of fine arts, social psychology and 20 years in architecture and sustainability consulting, she brings a variety of skills to her work and a unique perspective engaging the human dynamics of decision-making and creative collaboration to technical work. Her recent presentations include Greenbuild 2015 (in US, Brazil and Italy), Living Future 2014, NESEA 2015, 2016, and AIA National Convention, 2014.

March Evening Program featuring Barbra Batshalom
|
|
Tuesday, March 14, 5:30 - 7:30 pm
Presented in partnership with AIA-St. Louis
Being a top firm is about much more than getting design awards. The design community is recognizing that excellence is about design AND performance. This is reflected in the recently revised AIA Committee on the Environment's Top Ten awards, which now emphasizes the importance of actual building performance in addition to project's design intent.
Is your firm consistently delivering high performance buildings? Whether or not projects are LEED certified, you can develop internal systems and processes to ensure high performance projects across your portfolio. Successful companies realize improved project performance, increased profits and happier clients through performance-driven design.
This session will share frameworks, road maps and proven methodologies from successful firms to help attendees assess their current situation, identify strategic areas for improvement, and develop change management strategies to ensure widespread adoption of new processes and project delivery methodologies for continuous improvement.

Half Day Workshop featuring Barbra Batshalom
|
|
Wednesday, March 15, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm
Join leading expert in institutionalizing sustainability and improving firm performance and profitability Barbra Batshalom to examine your firm's current processes and methodologies, identify barriers to success, and formulate strategies to raise the bar and provide consistent, high quality performing projects.
How does your firm achieve excellence? Do you have a methodology to achieve consistent, high quality performance? Is sustainable, high performance design or LEED baked into your process? Is integrative design a myth or a reality for your teams? Have you signed the AIA 2030 Commitment and hit a wall - or just want to ensure success? This workshop will help you deconstruct your current project delivery process to identify barriers and formulate strategies to raise the bar and be on a path of continuous improvement. This is a fun, highly interactive way to have valuable dialogue within the firm while charting a course for the future that improves client services, business development and internal efficiencies.
Because this workshop is about how the firm operates, firms will benefit more if more representatives attend. A mix of principal, project manager and marketing or staff from across different business units yields an even richer output from the workshop, which can inform discussions and actions back at the office afterwards.
Firms sending 3 or more attendees will receive a 20% discount on registration.

St. Louis City Board of Alderman Approves Building Energy Awareness Ordinance |
|
The St. Louis City Board of Alderman recently approved a bill requiring municipal, institutional, commercial, and multifamily buildings over 50,000 square feet to track and report their energy and water usage annually using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.
Energy benchmarking & transparency policies harness market forces to save energy and drive investment in buildings.
With the passage of this bill, St. Louis joins cities already implementing similar policies: Kansas City, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Washington D.C., among others.
In 2016, St. Louis was awarded participation in the City Energy Project, a joint project of the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Institute for Market Transformation that works to create healthier, more prosperous American cities by making buildings more energy efficient, boosting local economies, and reducing harmful pollution.

Benchmarking Jam
|
|
Wednesday, March 22, 4:00 - 6:00 pm
Energy benchmarking is the process of measuring how much energy your building consumes and comparing your energy performance to similar buildings. Benchmarking is the first step toward saving energy and money!
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager is an online, interactive energy management tool that allows you to measure and track your building's energy and water consumption, identify investment priorities, and verify improvements over time. All buildings benefit from benchmarking; businesses, schools, congregations, non-profits and local governments are encouraged to attend.
Each building representative should review the event website to ensure they bring the information needed to start benchmarking in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.
USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter members are invited to volunteer at the Benchmarking Jam. Experience with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager is required. Volunteers may self-report their participation for 2 GBCI CE hours in the volunteer category. Interested volunteers should register online.

Setting Targets for Our Shared Success
|
|
At the 2017 Sustainability Summit, attendees will learn and apply innovative approaches to setting and achieving sustainability targets for the St. Louis region through knowledge sharing and networking. The St. Louis region has a robust foundation for sustainability efforts: a strong, collectively developed regional sustainability plan (OneSTL), a thorough City of St. Louis Sustainability Plan, and a multitude of efforts, individuals, and initiatives dedicated to making our region a more sustainable and resilient place.
The summit will address 7 themes:
biodiversity, buildings/land use, energy/emissions, food, materials, transportation, and water/green infrastructure. Local governments, non-profits, elected officials, infrastructure providers, community leaders, academics, students, and other attendees will learn from regional and national leaders striving to set and achieve sustainability goals. Together, we will grow our capacity to advance the St. Louis region towards a sustainable, resilient, and equitable future.
