Spring 2024

USF Health Pediatrics Newsletter Spring 2024

Chair's Message

Every supervisor knows that whatever the job description, it is important to list 5% other duties as assigned. This is the “out” that allows one to ask an employee to take on a new initiative or address an unforeseen aspect of the job. We all know that other duties as assigned often account for more than 5% of one’s time. The other area that occupies much of our professional life is the and then some activities — work that is not assigned, but still important. Our newsletter is chalk full of and then some activities. Most of our residents, staff and faculty do not have specific assignments for scholarly activity, mentorship, community work or service to their profession, and yet these activities are often the most rewarding. Seeing a project come to fruition, working with colleagues, either locally or nationally, on a new innovation or participating on a community board can bring us new perspectives and joy.

When I speak with junior faculty, I often talk about learning to say no, and the importance of learning to be focused and prioritizing the critical aspects of their job. But it is also important to say YES — to say yes to the and then some. To join a committee, work on a scholarly project with a student, give a community talk — all of these activities expand our horizons, provide opportunities for new relationships and enhance the reputation of our department and university. They may also help us get promoted or provide opportunities for travel, but I would argue the benefits are much more intangible. We are excited to highlight a number of these YES’s in this spring newsletter. As always – I am grateful to all those who say YES!

Kudos
